Samuel R. Bowen II, MD, a native of Sylacauga, Alabama, received a Bachelor's degree from Auburn University and his M.D. at UAB School of Medicine before completing his Internship and Residency at Wake Forest University School of Medicine. Since joining Birmingham Neurosurgery & Spine Group, P.C. in 1999, he has served in various capacities at Baptist Montclair Hospital, including the Executive Committee, Cancer Committee, and Health Information Committee. Currently, he is a member of numerous organizations, such as the American Association of Neurological Surgeons (including Joint Section on Disorders of the Spine and Peripheral Nerves,) the Congress of Neurological Surgeons (including Joint Section on Tumors of the Central Nervous System,) and the Medical Association of the State of Alabama.

Dr Bowen did a major back surgery on me in 2015 when I’d received very little hope that anything else could be done. After praying for help so I can have an abundant life again, Dr Bowen helped me tremendously! I will always be thankful for Him! He’s an excellent surgeon! Almost three weeks ago, Dr Bowen did a multilevel cervical spine surgery for me that also required a lot of work! I’m doing well and know I was in great hands! I’m expecting much success because I know I received the best surgeon possible! Thank you Dr Bowen!

He did my back surgery on 2004 and I have been pain free since. Great doctor but don't expect him to be very talkative.

Dr. Bowen is not one to candy coat a situation. He evaluates what the problem is and gives the patient the options for a solution. When I go to a surgeon for a spinal or neurological problem I want someone who can deduce problems and think on his feet. Dr. Bowen has proven this to me and he is the only one who will take me to surgery for back issues. Thank you Dr. Bowen.

I have been seeing Dr. Bowen for 4 years now. He has worked with me to help with my back pain and did surgery on me in 2012. He is extremely honest about options and what my chances are for pain relief. Even though It may not be what I want to hear (he doesn't have the best bedside manor but if you want someone to give it to you straight go to him!) I would recommend him but take his personality with a grain of salt.

Dr. Samuel Bowen was amazing. He checked on me every day before the surgery discussing options and the importance of the surgery. He was by my bed when I went under and when I woke up from the surgery. I would highly recommend him. He "fixed" my back quickly so I could regain a normal lifestyle.

Excellent results. Very skilled surgeon who told me exactly what the process would be and I recommend him highly.

Dr Bowen did surgery for a pinched nerve. Walked out of hospital with no pain in back and leg. Thanks Dr. Bowen A great surgery well done.

I have been seeing doctor Bowen since 2009 for back problems. He is one of the most hateful doctors I have ever encountered. He seems to be very uncaring about patients. He seems to be angry and sullen. It is hard to figure out if the anger is addressed at me or if he is just an angry person.

If you are not a male don't bother. He apparently dosent want female patient esp if you are over weight. I saw him roll his eyes at me! Pitiful!
