Dr. Chewing did back surgery in 2007. I have not had any problems since! He put in 2 cages and a new disc in the same surgery. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND him. He is my hero!

If it wasn't for Dr Chewning my Spinal Cord was severed just hanging by a thead and I could have moved wrong or just sneezed and I would be Parelized today and only had 16 months to live?! Dr. Chewning has a Wonderful bedside manner, he treats me as I am his only Patient he takes time to explain everything in detail, and where you can understand it!! I had L4 & L5 removed at Duke and the dr there put the screws in a forward position which cause me too lean forward 8 inches and I was in MUCH pain for a yr. THEN I went to Dr Chewning and he went in above the fusion that Duke had done, cut a wedge in the spine, pulled me up and i went home cooked a big thanksgiving dinner 2 days after leaving the hospital...I felt Great and had NO pain...he has done surgery on my neck as well...STILL not in any pain...its been since 1999. Dr Chewning is STILL my back Dr today 2014.

This doctor is meticulous about the placement of appliances in the bones. I could not ask for a better job as far as the bones are concerned. However if you have spine issues where the nerves are concerned I would recommend you seeing a neurosurgeon. I have nerve damage now that I did not have prior to my spine surgery. I am not saying that it is due to the surgery or due to this doctor's work. I am just saying that if I would have done more homework prior to my surgery I would have chosen a neurosurgeon. This doctor does what he does very well, just make sure that it is what you need and want.

Dr. Chewning performed major surgery on my back. I have screws,rods,cages and a new disc.The surgery went perfect. He was very accurate on what I could expect after the surgery. Dr. Chewning is very caring, taking time and answering any questions I had. After he left, I found it very hard to find someone to fill his shoes. One of the doctors I saw was very rude and arrogant. I am going out of network on my insurance just so I can still have him for my doctor.

My rating on Dr. Chewning is very poor. He performed thoracic fusion on my back and fused the INCORRECT VERTEBRAE. Within 2 months of telling me of his mistake, he retired, as well as the assistant surgeon. Dr. Chewning gave me a story about going to do technical work for a company in California, but I have heard he is now working under a friend in Charlotte, NC
