Dr. Samuel Osifo Okpaku, MD

He is not good doctor, The good doctor will not talk down to you. He will also discuss money issues/bill in front of one of his receptionist without asking you for permission first. Trouble bedside manner. The first time I talked to him about my issues I didn’t feel comfortable. Lucky I mostly dealt with his nurse practitioner. He doesn’t call back. He also drags his feet on paperwork. He still has some paperwork for me that he has had for over a week. He wanted my wife and I to meet. I told the receptionist that we can’t come in due to my son’s online schooling. She said they will call back. They didn’t big surprise! When I called in for my appointment she told me I was supposed to come in. I told her the same thing I told her yesterday. I also said that she said she would call back and she didn’t. She put me on hold for 35 minutes. Never check back with me. I hung up and called back and had to leave a voicemail. Guess what no one called back! Find someone else. NEVER GO TO him...!!!!

This doctor is very RUDE, he Ing up ph after he said meet him tomorrow without asking what time or make appt from his staffs, he overcharged ins to get more money by put office visit and consultation different categories, and he claimed $ 100 for filing ins paperworks each time. They can put you on hold for long time when you called to his office and won’t answer you again for the second time when you called them back. This doctor isn’t respect to patients and didn’t help of mental issue of patients base of his physiatrist position status. He hold ins paperworks to get more money from patients and ins , he didn’t realize , by holding ins paperworks, patients didn’t get pay and patient can’t pay his service, he only thinking of himself only for money,he didn’t want understand of patients condition and situation especially under COVID19 situations and condition that he always excuses he must pay his staffs, he made worse of patients mental health cause made more depress with his pressure… holding ins paperworks. NEVER CONSULTATION with this doctor cause he let his nurse took care patients.

I have been a patient for 3+ years. The nice thing is that the practice has availability (I assume for similar reasons to why I'm looking for another provider). The nurse practitioner is great, but everything else is terrible. The front desk staff are neither warm nor friendly. My first meeting with Dr. Okpaku left me feeling scared to take the medication he prescribed because he gave me the distinct impression that he was just throwing random medications at my mental illness to see what stuck. He didn't explain why a medication was chosen or anything. It seemed completely arbitrary. When I asked, he said simply that everyone responds to medications differently. While this is true, he can (and should) be aware of how it works and how the majority of people respond, common problems, etc. Dr. Okpaku, while I'm sure he is qualified, does not inspire confidence in me and I actually refuse to see him when I have appointments, preferring to deal with the nurse practitioner. Additionally,… due to a recent qualifying event, I have had to apply for insurance coverage outside of my place of work. My application was flagged (read: denied) for use of maintenance psychiatric medication. I'm attempting to appeal, but to do so I needed a letter from my psychiatrist explaining that I'm low risk to insure. I called the office 6 times on 3 different days. 3 of the calls on one day were not answered. I was told on the first answered call that they would check about getting me a letter and call me back. No call back came. The second answered call said the same thing, including that I would receive a call back. But no call came. The third answered call said I would have the letter emailed to me by end of day or get a call back for more information. Neither of these things occurred. So I stopped by the office. I waited an hour for Dr. Okpaku to fit me in, at which time I was asked very basic questions to which the answers could be found in my records or, at the very least, obtained over a phone call (e.g. How long have you been a patient here? Have you ever been hospitalized?). Dr. Okpaku then dictated a very generic letter (Essentially: This person has been a patient for about 3 years, is stable, and is on antidepressants. This is common in society. She has never been hospitalized and is low risk to insure) to the administrative assistant. The Admin Assistant failed to write the letter down verbatim and also failed to notice when she typed it up that the first sentence was incoherent. Thankfully I reviewed the letter before sending it anywhere. Then the Admin Assistant said she was going to sign the letter herself, with her own name, which is completely unacceptable as a letter to an insurance company for an appeal. When I objected, she said she would get Dr. Okpaku to sign it and it would be in my email by the end of the day. Of course, it wasn't. So, for a second time, I went in to the office. She said she didn't have time yesterday to send it to me because she was the only one at the desk - 1) It doesn't take long to scan in a letter and email it; 2) If it couldn't be accomplished, I should have been notified of a change of plans. You don't say you're going to do something and then simply not do it. I finally, after 6 phone calls and showing up twice in person to the office, have the generic letter to support my appeal for insurance coverage, but the way this was handled was unprofessional and unacceptable. They have no follow through and you have to stay on them until they do what they say they will. The moment coverage gets approved, I will be seeking a different provider for my psychiatric needs.

Great doctor. Helped me with my depression.

At 18 years old I had a sudden onset of psych issues. It was hard because I had absolutely no psych history. For three years I’ve been in and out of treatment, and been through 4 psychiatrists. I had given up. I heard about this Dr. Okpaku and at the time, I had no desire in finding a new p.This man saved my life. He took me from 11 psych meds down to 3 and in six months my life was turned around completely. I still see him regularly and he just keeps getting better. He keeps me on track and holds me accountable. His laugh is so contagious and his knowledge and expertise are mind blowing. With this being said, he is not warm and fuzzy, and you must be patient with his plan of care. You have to trust him and maintain vulnerability. He won’t let you down. He is making a difference in this world. Honestly, I feel honored to get to see him monthly, because, aside from clinical intervention, he was there for me when no one else was. He even took his own time to call me, before a job… interview that I had told him I was nervous for, and he gave me a little pep talk and I ended up starting a career. I could go on and on, but I will never be able to explain to the full extent. All in all, he is hands down, the most brilliant, compassionate, proactive physician I have ever met.

Being treated by him for over 20 years, could no have have a better clinician.

BEWARE!!!!! If you make an appt with the doctor and you can end up seeing his unskilled, untrained nurse practioners....the star should be ZERO
