Dr. Samuel Edward Poppell, MD

Today I'm going to an excellent retinal surgeon on north Beal Parkway in Fort Walton. It will probably be my last appointment as he says he cannot rectify the damage Dr. Poppell did during a terrible cataract job. According to doctors at the University of Alabama, the University of Florida, Eye Center South, ophthalmologists in Pensacola, Mobile, Destin, and Dothan, when Poppell did the surgery, he pulled the retina off the backwall of my eye and he cut nerves that connect the retina. I've had to endure twelve laser surgeries, a total draiing of the fluid in my right eye, the lens Poppell inserted actually fell out three times because of the damage Poppell did to the interior of my eye. Now I've lost most sight in my eye; I can still distinguish "objects" but I cannot read, detect any details, and at night, I'm almost blind in that eye. I'm going blind because of Poppell and he continues to live in his mansion in Destin, never thinking about the many people he damaged. If you're… considering a cataract job, I encourage you to go to Eye Center South in Destin or Dothan but regardless of what you're told, NEVER let Poppell touch your eye. He's retired now, sitting on his porch in Destin looking at the Bay, and he never has a thought about the people he blinded. Someday he will stand before God to answer for what he did and I hope God makes him answer for all the people he blinded.

I have been going for years to Dr. Poppell until recently after I found out I had glaucoma and he never addressed that issue....which is very important.

I had cataract surgery with Dr. Popped several years ago. Tomorrow will be my fifth eye surgery since that day trying to get my vision back to where it was before the cataract surgery. Even with this next surgery, I suspect it will not get back to that point. I'm so sorry I ever had this done. You will never get a second chance at it. Be ware.

Seriously the best, most knowledgable Opthalmologist I've ever been to. I had LASIK done and would absolutely recommend to anyone who is a candidate. He changed my LIFE!

Dr. Poppell has taken care of me and my family for the past 19 years. He is an excellent surgeon and recently performed cataract surgery on my husband. My husband had a great experience with both Dr. Poppell, his staff and the Surgery Center staff. He vision has made an incredible difference in his life. Thank you Dr. Poppell!

Very unprofessional. Inattentive surgery caused a tear in my retina. Three major surgeries in an attempt to save my eye. Still having problems and now I may need a corneal transplant~!! I wouldn't let Poppell work on my cat~!! Other eye docs in Fort Walton have told me about other people Poppell has damaged. He even makes you sign a release BEFORE surgery that you will not sue him before a judge and a jury. Instead, he takes you to an arbitration panel to resolve the problem. Who knows where they come from? My advice, go to Destin or Pensacola for your eye work. I suggest you avoid Poppell.

Dr. Poppell was inattentive during my cataract surgery, talking about a car he had recently bought and he was in a hurry. He pulled the lens out too quickly and tore my retina. Another doctor had to drain the fluid out of my eye and repair the retina. A year later the lens Poppell had inserted fell inside my eye and a doctor had to go in and get it out and resew it back in place. Then I got an eye infection I was told that happened during my initial cataract surgery. Now I am losing my cornea and am facing a transplant. I wouldn't let Poppell do surgery on my cat and you better think about it again~!! Other eye docs have told me that even they think he should not be allowed to do surgery. Because he is so bad, he makes you sign a form BEFORE the surgery agreeing not to sue him before a judge and jury. He has an arbitration board he uses and who knows how fair they are? I am going blind in my right eye and I have been told by other eye docs that it is directly the cause of… what Poppell did to me. I recommend you not let Poppell touch you~!!
