Review for Dr. Skarote – from a daughter who never forgot Even though my experience with Dr. Skarote was in 2014, I’ve never forgotten what he did for my mom during one of the scariest times in her life. She was in the CICU in Rock Hill, South Carolina, with pneumonia and a condition called empyema — an infection in the space around her lungs. A chest tube wasn’t working, she was on a ventilator, and the outlook wasn’t good. We were told to prepare for the worst. What made it even harder was that this wasn’t the first time. For years, my mom had been going through repeated visits where doctors would drain fluid off her lungs, but no one could figure out why it kept happening. The treatments gave short-term relief, but the root issue was never addressed. When Dr. Skarote took over her care, he initially passed along the same message as the previous team — that the situation didn’t look good. But he said something didn’t sit right with him. It bothered him all night, so he stayed up… and reviewed her entire medical history, not just the current records. That’s when he discovered that years earlier, during cancer treatment, my mom had lost crucial hormone function — specifically from her thyroid and adrenal glands. It was something that had gone unnoticed for a long time. He started her on hormone replacements, and everything turned around. Her condition stabilized, she was taken off the ventilator, and by the next morning, she was sitting up in bed, acting like nothing had ever happened. From that point on, she never had to have doctor visits just to have fluid drained. What he figured out didn’t just help her survive that one episode — it finally ended a years-long cycle of temporary treatments and uncertainty. When she woke up, she remembered Dr. Skarote standing in the doorway and saying something like, “You’re one heck of a woman.” She said she responded something like, “You’re one heck of a doctor.” My mom passed away earlier this year, but what Dr. Skarote did in just a few days has stayed with me ever since. His thoroughness, intuition, and refusal to stop at the surface level gave my mom more time — and gave all of us answers. I’ll always be extremely grateful for the lasting impact he had.

Dr. Skarote made me feel like I was his only patient. He was reviewing my injury and looking through my past medical history after the first visit. He called me at home long after the office had closed to ask me questions to clarify details of my injury. Thank you Dr. Skarote!
