After chasing my rare beyond rare solitary fibrous tumor presentation for over 11 months and meeting with specialists at UofM & Johns Hopkins & Moffitt, I decided it was worth seeking a 4th opinion and connected with Steven Attia who linked me up with Sanjay Bagaria at Mayo Jacksonville. One of the BEST choices I have ever made. Other specialty centers had me flagged for radiation and possibly even chemo. Other specialty centers did a lot of double-speak and were inexperienced or uncertain about my condition. Dr. Bagaria was confident and unwavering in his recommendation that what I had was in fact benign and that the last thing I would want to do was use radiation. Dr. Bagaria removed my baseball size tumor buried deep in my pelvic basin and did so in a way that completely preserved all my adjacent organs, while still getting the most ideal negative margins. The pathology was in fact completely benign. This doctor completely exceeded all our expectations. For example, I lost… 1500ML of blood during tumor needle biopsy at Hopkins. Yet Bagaria in full radical resection of the entire mass lost only 100ML of blood. Hopkins and Moffitt warned me the surgery would take 6-10 hours and 7-10 days hospital recovery. Bagaria and his team at Mayo got the tumor out in just 2.5hrs and I was only in the hospital for 3 nights. I am now 10 weeks post surgery and have already run 6 half marathons. I found Dr. Sanjay Bagaria to be an arrogant, egotistical person. When asked why he recommended certain medical course of action his reply was, “because this is what I do and I know what I am doing.” Far more alarming then his personality traits were the poor medical advice that he dispensed to me. He came ill prepared to the exam room, and without taking the time to review my case, he proceeded to plan my future based solely on his expertise. It turns out his expertise was wrong and it was simply bad medical advice. There are so many wonderful, talented, dedicated people in the medical field. I suggest you seek them out for yourself.
