I went into the CATH Lab with a possible blockage. He met with me before the procedure and explained what he was going to do. He found a 99% blockage of my artery, a Widow Maker. He put a stent in saving my life. I am back to normal activities and feeling 100% better. Thank you again!!!!!

Before having the TAVR surgery, please do the research on the real possibility of a stroke for the first seven days after surgery, 30 days after, and 1 year after. I wish we would have. My mother passed 5 days after having this surgery. According to the Journal of Geriatric Cardiology, this would imply: “Early stroke is mainly due to debris embolization during the procedure, whereas later events are associated with patient specific factors”. I was in the initial appointment with Dr. Matthews. Our concern was with her platelets, which he addressed. Never were we told about the real risk factor of a stroke especially for women. Sure mom had to sign papers before surgery, but they seemed pretty standard. Dr. Matthews never bothered to contact my stepfather to offer any explanations or condolences. He received a sympathy card almost a week later from their office. We were told by the neurosurgeon at Manatee Memorial that “they see this all the time”…

He was 3 hours late for surgery; nurses said he was notorious for being late. Communication was a bare minimum once he arrived.

Dr. Mathews has an excellent bedside manner. He explains things in a way I understand and takes his time.

He is personable cares about what you are saying puts your mind at ease, very comfortable to work with and get to heart of your problem quickly and takes great care of you.
