Dr. Sarah Alice Hood, MD

She came recommended by my primary physiciain--now I know because she is simply on their list. I came in for some comprehensive advice about the possibility being able to conceive at the age of 41. The look on her face was incredulous and before we even took the tests, she kept saying over and over, women your age should be realistic and just adopt or get an egg donor--no discussion about prescribing Clomid or seeing fertility specialist, no discussion about anything helpful. She made me feel as if I were wasting her time even discussing it. Given, everything she said may or may not be true--but we didn't have all of the facts and she came across pretty cruel and brusque. Finally, the test results came in. She called me and stated in the same indifferent tone, yeah, just think about adoption because these lab results show an undetectable egg count--oh, but you are NOT in menopause, a long way off. What the? As a layperson, I'm thinking, no menopause means you can still get… pregnant, yet she says I have undetectable eggs? As I asked her to explain more, she couldn't. There is no way a doctor should communicate such inconsistent results without being able to explain them in detail to a patient's satisfaction. But she was quick to ask me to come in to have other procedures done not related to my original request. After feeling totally devastated, I finally picked myself up and went somewhere else and received a comprehensive understanding and acceptance of my options. And guess what? Children (of my own) are still a viable option, though it will take some effort on my part, and I am realistically aware of the pros and cons. That is all I wanted from Dr. Hood, but she seemed blinded by her own alleged prejudice against older women who want to be Moms to communicate accurate information.
