Dr. Sarah Martin Legett, MD

Dr. Sarah Legett, a native of Austin, leads the Palliative Care Program at Dell Children's Medical Center of Central Texas.. Dr. Legett received her medical education and pediatric training from St. Louis University. She subsequently worked and taught for several years in Malawi, Central Africa serving as both medical officer in a large mission hospital and pediatric faculty in the College of Medicine. Upon return to the US, she provided indigent care in East St. Louis and in 1997 joined the General Academic faculty at St. Louis University. Increasingly interested in the care of children with life limiting and life threatening illness, she completed a Palliative Medicine fellowship at the Medical College of Wisconsin in 2005. Dr. Legett holds the Medical Directorship of the Palliative Care Team. This interdisciplinary team will work in collaboration with health care practitioners to provide care to children with life-threatening and life-limiting illnesses, including children still …undergoing curative treatments as well as those for whom curative efforts are unsuccessful. Palliative care is a family centered model of care, with a holistic focus on the child and families needs, including physical, emotional psychosocial and spiritual needs. The team can assist in difficult pain and symptom management, facilitate communication, goal setting and decision-making and assist with coordination of care in both hospital and home settings.
