Dr. Sarah Stuart Schaefer, MD

I had such a horrible experience with this doctor that I still think about it 10+ years later. We arrived 5 MINUTES late to our appointment (life happens)... I'm seriously talking minutes. She was so angry over this that she wouldn't make eye contact with me or my mother the whole appointment. We were so confused and asked if everything was ok with her, and she said "frankly, you were late and you're lucky I am seeing you at all." I guess people have a right to be annoyed but it was such odd childish behavior for a MD. Several days later she called me back with my results, which required a follow up visit. Naturally, as a normal person who hears that something concerning showed up on a scan - I asked a follow up question about what it could be. She started YELLING saying "I am doing you a favor and calling you in the middle of dinner, I cannot answer your questions! You can come back for a follow up!" I didn't ask this lady to call me in the middle of her dinner!! I didn't ask for rush… results or anything that would require her to call me at that time - nor did I appreciate her psychotic energy when I was concerned about my health. Why didn't she just call me during normal office hours? Suffice to say, I got follow up work done elsewhere with a normal doctor (everything was fine) and would never go back to this looney lady ever again. Clearly has mental issues. STAY AWAY!

I had complete confidence in Dr Schaefer and highly recommend her. She’s very smart, serious-minded & highly focused on every aspect of your cancer diagnosis and ultimate surgery. Her care is tender, hopeful, sincere & positive & I knew I had found an extraordinary doctor to get me through my diagnosis.

She seemed very caring and answered all my questions . She personally phoned me when the results of my biopsy were in.

Outstanding Surgeon, Extremely Professional, Empathetic, Courteous, Kind, Great Patient Manners, in addition to following up surgery. I can go on and on. I was pleased she did my surgery and touched on my life.

She is fabulous !!! She is reassuring and calm explaining the situation. Her radiologist who does the biopsy, is outstanding. Dr Mehta. comforting. caring. explains everything. no rush. Wonderful during a scary time in your life.

I was originally diagnosed with Stage 2 Breast Cancer - according to Dr. Schaefer the most common type. Easy fix - double mastectomy with treatment and reconstructive surgery. I asked her if she would be sending me for a PET or any other type of scans to see if the cancer was just in the breast. The answer I received is that it wasn't necessary and the insurance would probably not pay for it. This was the answer I received even before the insurance company was contacted, which by the way if you have BCBS you don't need pre-authorization for any testing. I agreed thinking she is the doctor and she knows best. Dr. Schaefer then scheduled me for surgery. About 2 weeks later I started to experience pain in my lower back, I called Dr. Schaefer's office and that is when they sent me for a full body bone scan and a CAT scan of my Abdomen and Pelvis. The following Monday I received a PHONE CALL from Dr. Schaefer to tell me that she has cancelled my surgery. When I asked why she said… because you now have Stage 4 Breast Cancer - the cancer had spread to my bones, lungs, and lymph nodes. She called me with this news - never asked me where I was - if I was driving, at the store - nothing. Then hung up like I was nobody. I've never heard from her again. My advice stay far away from this Doctor - she is not only unprofessional, but a heartless person.

Dr. Schaefer is one of the most caring, compassionate Drs. I have ever gone to. When I heard that I had breast cancer, my whole world was turned upside down. Dr. Schaefer spent an enormous amount of time with my husband and me, thoroughly explaining every step of the way and answering each and every question we had with the outmost of respect. Dr. Schaefer goes above and beyond what most Top Drs. do. She thinks nothing of calling her patients at night to give them good results from their lab work or test results. One night I received a call from Dr. Schaefer at my house and she prefaced the conversation by saying, "I know I'm seeing you tomorrow morning at 8:30 but I didn't want you to have to wait any longer than you needed to for your test results!" I felt 100% confident with Dr. Schaefer from the first day and now 5 months later. Dr. Schaefer is known in the field for having great margins and I am so grateful that I found her. During my 6 weeks of radiation with Dr. Grann… (another fabulous Dr!), I met lots of patients who had their surgery at Sloan Kettering and they were so unhappy with the lack of time their Drs. spent with them. They all said that they felt it was run like a factory. One Dr. told her patient "I'm not here to hold your hand!" WOW! Thank you Dr. Schaefer for your expertise

Worst experience ever - waited over an hour nd still never saw her . They admitted to double booking but I believe triple booking.

Doctor Schaefer took time and answered all my questions. She is a very caring physician. The operation was done superbly, no side affects or problems and six years cancer free. Excellent follow-up as well. I fully recommend Dr. Schaefer and did quite well under her care !!
