Dr. Sarah Jane Schwarzenberg, MD

My daughter was taken off a medicine for IBD without Dr Schwarzenberg reviewing the biopsy results which had prompted our last doctor to put her on it. This caused several months of severe symptoms a year later that could have been avoided. Because other tests were normal she refused to test my daughter anymore and blamed it in nerve pain, did not even follow up on her severe weight loss and inability to eat. Even lectured us about how she didn't have IBD. Another colonoscopy was finally ordered which showed that she did. We had experience with her for another condition my daughter has and found that she is effective when there is a concrete diagnosis, but when things aren't clear cut she is quick to throw up her hands and say I can't help you.

In the mid 1980s I switched over to the U of M clinics for care for my recent diagnosis of Crohn's disease. Dr. Schwarzenberg was the GI doc I saw most often. She literally saved my life. For many years I kept my drivers license as reminder of this. My weight was on the upswing, and health improving significantly. I had finally gotten up to 106lbs at 5'4" tall. While I moved on to the adult practice during college, and have landed elsewhere, I literally owe this lady my life. She was always kind, understanding, and forthcoming with information. I never felt talked down to, even though I was a kid. She helped me understand what was known, and not known, about Crohn's Disease. She listened to my concerns and was always professional. Unless something dramatic has changed (I doubt it with my over 30 years experience in seeing doctors) I highly recommend Dr. Schwarzenberg.
