Dr. Scot McKay, MD

I called to get an appt for my son with Dr. McKay, I said he would be self-pay, but he did have TennCare. I was then told the doctor would not see anyone with TennCare due TennCare doesn't pay for meds. I informed them I use GoodRx, not insurance for Rx. I would be completely self-pay. I was told the pharmacy can tell it is TennCare & there was an issue w/ a previous patient who demanded a refund because TennCare wouldn't pay for the Rx. I knew they are out of network & you pay up front, also what does it matter to them if I use GoodRx at my Pharmacy? Dr McKay says on his Bio the following, "He felt a calling into psychiatry as it allows him to spend time and better understand his patients to promote wellness and not just prescribe medications." He felt a calling -- a calling to help? NO, it appears a calling for MONEY or someone who DOES NOT have TennCare, because I think he believes I could not pay the fee. I'd like to thank Dr. McKay for showing me the problem with the mental health… system in the US, it seems if I had any other insurance he would have seen my son, because I even called back & asked if I cancelled my son's TennCare would he see him? She called back & said no because it would cause to much of a problem. How can that cause a problem if my son is no longer on TennCare? He is basically saying if you have any other insurance or if your son had never been on TennCare I would see him, but because he was on TennCare at one time, I won't see him, because he isn't worthy. I am thankful my son didn't see this Dr, because I can only imagine what he is really like. Change your bio Dr, cuz you don't care for patients, you care about ranking in society basically.

Very kind and extremely intelligent and empathic!

For reasons yet to be fully explicated, most clinicians working in fields of medicine outside of Psychiatry tend to have a significant degree of apprehension about Psychiatric medicine. As one who used to be think Psychiatry was FAKE MEDICINE, I was unequivocally proven wrong when I fortuitously became one of Dr. McKay's patients. He is a markedly patient clinician who actively listens and seems to have impeccable timing when asking the important questions. Furthermore, he is also knowledgeable in the field of Biochemistry.

Dr. McKay and his team are absolutely wonderful. I couldn't be happier with Dr. McKay’s deft ability to approach individualized therapy from multiple angles while integrating aspects which are important to me.

Couldn't be more impressed at how Dr. McKay put me and my adolescent at ease at our initial appointment. He conveys that he likes you and that he's listening intently, non-judgmentally and with compassion. He's not just going through the motions of gathering information; he seems actually interested in your clinical story. When it's time to discuss treatment, it's clear he enjoys problem-solving from the perspective of the research, his clinical experience, and the unique individual in front of him. Like another reviewer said, he's markedly cerebral. For us, he brought new treatments and explanations to the table. He's not just processing your case with the same inflexible algorithm he's applying to everyone else with the same diagnoses. Plus, he's such a genuinely nice guy! He doesn't seem irked if you question him or suggest your own ideas because you're a well-informed layperson; instead, he provides explanations that make you confident in him as an expert and someone who you can… trust with sharing all your concerns. This combination of patient engagement, clinical expertise and warm, friendly personality can be very hard to find among psychiatrists. My teenager noticed the difference too, because it was is the first time they walked out of an appointment in a better mood than when they walked in! I have never written a review after an initial appointment, but Dr. McKay is a real gift.

The person who left that subpar rating/review of Dr. McKay is most likely projecting his/her own negative feelings about oneself. If you want a top notch clinical psychiatrist who seems to only get better every time we talk, give him a chance.

Let me preface the following statement with the fact that it is COMPLETELY UNCHARACTERISTIC of me to take time to compose a review whether positive or negative about anything or anyone. Dr. Scott McKay is a young, markedly cerebral, and exceptionally attentive listener who actually does "take the time to get to fully understand a person's situation and mindset." In my professional opinion, I would enthusiastically recommend Dr. McKay as your clinical psychiatrist without any reservations.
