Scott J. Swanson, MD

I met with Dr. Swanson when he was working in NYC at Mt. Sinai hospital. I was 43 yrs old - with a 3 year old child when I was diagnosed with Stage 1A Lung cancer. I was referred to Dr Swanson and informed that he was the very “BEST” in his field. He got me in for VATS surgery the following week and removed a 1.4 cm nodule in my upper left lung. A wedge resection was performed (removing 1/2 of my upper left lung and the 5 nodules that were present) Thankfully, all 5 nodules came back negative. I was one of the lucky ones - being in the hands the the absolute BEST Thoracic Surgeon. I am currently waiting for the results of my annual Lung CT - (in Dr. Swanson’s office at Brigham’s Boston) - Fingers crossed ?? ?? - it’s another clean bill of health. It’s been a total of 16 years that I’ve received a clean bill of health with no reoccurrence. I keep up with my annual CT scans and followed Dr. Swanson to Brigham’s in Boston - where we now reside on the South Shore. The fact that he… practices here - was the catalyst of our move from NY to Boston. Fingers crossed ?? ?? - all will be okay. It’s still very scary. My advice - if u were a smoker or exposed to a smoking household growing up - get a “NON CONTRAST” CT Scan. Contrast will not pick up minuscule nodules. More insurances are now paying for these scans if you had exposure or were a smoker in your younger years. Or suck it up and pay out to of pocket. My Dear Mom died of this awful disease (only 2 weeks b/f I myself was going n for surgery Sadly, she l didn’t have the luck that I did. God bless Dr. Swanson! The BEST of the BEST ! He’s compassionate, brilliant, professional & a miracle worker with his skills/talent/expertise. No need to look He saved my life and I am forever grateful. ?? THANK YOU DR. SWANSON! ??????

Dr. Swanson is one of the best Physicians I have ever been to, let alone a Surgeon. He is an extremely knowledgeable and skilled surgeon, courteous, very calm, personable, well spoken and he listens well! I am totally impressed and thrilled that i was fortunate enough to be his patient.

My mom was diagnosed with Stage 4 lung cancer and was told to get her affairs in order given the size of the tumor and how enveloping around her heart it was. We met with Dr Swanson at Mt. Sinai who said he thought surgery was the best option. Another world renowned NYC thoracic surgeon said an operation was her only chance but said chemo was needed first and noted the surgery then was going to be incredibly difficult because of her weakened state. Dr. Swanson's bedside manner and very assuring manner convinced my mother to do the pneumenectomy (the cancerous tumor while larger than a grapefruit was miraculously confined to her one lung). When a small tumor appeared in the other lung, he performed a resection again. While chemotherapy helped, the surgery I have no doubt saved my mom and has her living 10 years later in her early 70s. She traveled to Boston for years after for her annual check-up because of how focused he was on her getting better. If you have late stage lung cancer… that is potentially operable and you live anywhere in the US, this is a must see doctor to go to in my humble opinion and that of my family.

Dr. Swanson was referred as a recommended thoracic surgeon for our father during his unsuccessful battle with cancer. In my opinion, he was unhelpful, condescending and unsympathetic to my father and our family during a devastating time for all of us. He appeared to immediately judge my father based on his appearance without meaningfully delving into his history. Rather than explain thoughtfully to us why he did not feel our dad was fit for surgery or what bad outcomes would likely result, he was, in my view, terse and rude and we were left feeling that we were beneath him in both intellect and importance. We were not disappointed because he declined to operate, we were disappointed because we got the impression that he was unwilling to spend any meaningful time with us to discuss the options or possible outcomes in our time of need. Bottom line is that we were at a terrible time fighting for our dad's life and felt like we were being treated like an inconvenient annoyance. We… ended up transferring his care to Rhode Island where he received compassionate and reasonable care from another thoracic surgeon who treated my father and our family with dignity.

Dr Swanson was amazing and brilliant. Thank God we found him when we did.

Excellent VATS Surgeon but very poor communication skills. He is not thorough in explaining tests, diagnoses, or your future after surgery. There are a lot of "I don't know's". I find meetings with him very frustrating & not helpful so I may need to change doctors for follow up. I would choose him for his surgical abilities but not his bedside manner. He is very poor at explaining the surgery whereas one of his Residents could be quite clear.

I am a young active male who somehow happened to be diagnosed with Esophageal Cancer before the age of 30. I was referred to Dana Farber by my oncologist due to the rarity of my disease, given my age and active healthy lifestyle. I am currently 7 months post surgery (after having an Esophagectomy and 12 rounds of chemo), and the quality of my life is actually better now then before I was ever diagnosed with the disease. Dr Swanson, his colleagues, and those assisting in my care were nothing short of amazing in attending to my needs, pre and post surgery. He is a caring and knowledgeable professional who is truly passionate about his work. Now that I'm winning this battle I've realized how truly lucky I was to be under his care. If you find yourself in a similar situation, I strongly encourage you to make an appointment with Dr. Swanson, as I have no doubt that you will feel more encouraged and at ease with the journey they call cancer.

Our visit with Dr. Swanson was the best thing to happen to us. He is brilliant and kind. Mu husband's surgery went well and I completely entrust him to do the major surgery in November.

My Mom went to Mount Sinai Medical Center in NYC to see Dr. Scott Swanson Chief of Thoracic Surgery. Dr. Scott Swanson told my mom he could perform VATS to remove a suspect mass in the right lower lobe of her lung. My mom insisted that Dr Scott Swanson was to perform the surgery. Dr. Scott Swanson told my mom that he would do the surgery. Against her personal wishes Dr. Scott Swanson Chief of Thoracic Surgery of Mount Sinai Medical Center allowed Dr. Cynthia Chin to perform the surgery. My mom went into respiratory failure 2 days following the surgery. My mom was put on life support. Dr. Chin labeled the surgery failure as SARS which is common for drug overdoses or trauma from an automobile accident. After 30 days my mom's five sons, four daughter-in-laws and six grandchildren had to let her go. Dr. Chin said that when we remove the life support that my mom would feel like she was having an orgasm. Dr. Swanson did not even apologize.

Dr. Swanson is a fantastic doctor and outstanding minimally invasive thoracic surgeon. He saved my life. He has a wonderful personality. He is attentive to his patient's needs and questions. He has a great support team. He is my living hero.
