Dr. Sean Steven Gupton, MD

Today I brought my 90-year old mom to SMA Urgent Care at Sienna Heights for a toe nail wound. Check-in with Tamiyah was smooth at front desk. Waited in exam room for the Dr for 50 minutes. Dr. Sean Gupton came to the exam room, took a cursory look at my mom’s toe without even getting close to get a good look. He said it needs a foot care specialist to deal with this. He asked me to take her to the ER. Most Podiatrists are closed on Sundays. I was hoping he or his nurse would at least clean and dress the wound. I will leave out the non-material details and just focus on Dr. Gupton’s communication and bedside manner. It was atrocious. Never in my 60 years of dealing with doctors have I ever had the misfortune of encountering a doctor with such an appalling personality. He was loud and agitated. I said I would like to talk to him. I said I would to have a dialogue with him. But he was not having it. He repeated at least 2 times that he went to medical school. I asked for the wound… to be cleaned and dressed. I realized he is not a podiatrist. But as an urgent care doctor, asking for this from him is not unreasonable. I thought there was toe tissue in the pinched nail. It looked like that visually. I said if the nail is trimmed it will bleed more. The Dr reminded me angrily that he went to medical school again and told me there are no blood vessels in nails. Yes, I know that. It had occurred to me independently. I was talking about the toe tissue in the pinched nail. He did not want to listen. He did not want hear. Is it unreasonable to ask a doctor to listen, to expect thoughtfulness and consideration? Eventually, not an APN, or even a RN. LPN Samantha came and she cleaned/dressed the wound with kindness and empathy. An LPN showed more compassion, grace and ability to communicate than Dr. Gupton, who by the way, went to medical school. So I was told few times during this encounter. Attn. SMA recruiters: Please use psyc instruments to assess for psychopathy and sociopathy in new hire doctors. Will serve the SMA team well. Your patients will thank you. Would also suggest hiring from schools the likes of Johns Hopkins and UCLA, instead of scrapping for the leftovers from Grenada or Manitoba.

Dr Gupton was friendly, cheery, understanding and he listened. Very pleased with the care received.

Dr Gupton is one of the best doctors in my opinion. He explains and listens to everything very well, very smart and makes you feel good about the care he provides without rushing you at all. I am afraid I will not find a better doctor so I have made him my primary physician. Wish all doctors were this good, we wouldn't have all these health care problems!
