Dr. Shannon Brown Routhouska, MD

I went to see her for a routine skin cancer screening. Afterwards, I mentioned to her that I had noticed that my hair part had STARTED going a LITTLE bit into my crown. (from a photo I saw of me taken from behind) I still had VERY VERY thick hair. Looking back, what I had was FINE & I wish I would have not panicked about the future. Just from my question and a photo on my phone and without actually examining the density of my hair, nor considering blood work, she suggested that I use Rogaine (In my 40's with THICK hair and my iron was ONLY 23 ng/ml btw) She never discussed with me HOW the medication works. She never discussed the side effects. Did she really think that I would want to use this topical medication as directed for remainder of my life already? There is much to learn when considering this MEDICATION. Had I known then what I know now, I would have NEVER EVER put that poison on my scalp!! My hair started falling out. Hair fall is normal according to the… instructions, so I didn't worry too much, plus I had so much hair to start with it didn't immediately make me panic. I used it for 3 months to see what it could do, not realizing the damage that it WAS doing. My scalp hurt, it was annoying to use and I didn't feel it was worth it, so I stopped. My scalp and follicles had a BAD reaction to Rogaine and it caused Chronic Telogen Effluvium. My hair has been falling out for over 18 months and still going! My scalp has areas of inflammation & redness that I am currently treating with topical steroids. I can't express the devastation this is causing me. I wish I had never ever asked her anything about my hair that day. I had amazing hair :( I may never get back to where I was. I have no idea what the future holds for me and it's scary. While I think Dr. Routhouska is a nice lady, she gave me the worst advice I have ever received.

Dr. Routhouska is a warm, attentive, and knowledgeable physician. She treats you as a whole person and is flexible when possible with courses of treatment, according to the condition, circumstances, and insurance coverage. Given my history of melanoma, I am glad to have such a great dermatologist.

Dr. Routhouska is an exceptional person and dermatologist. She is incredibly personable and professional. I was delighted with my first visit. Her engaging manner, quick and accurate diagnosis, and willingness to answer all my questions exceeded my expectations.
