Wellness with Dr. Avery — Inclusive Direct Primary Care and Personalized Primary Care
Dr. Sharifa Avery started Wellness with Dr. Avery to create a different kind of primary care — one rooted in time, relationship, and whole-person health. She believes Direct Primary Care (DPC) is the answer to a healthcare system that too often prioritizes speed, profit, and conformity over human dignity. Too many patients — especially women, Black patients, neurodivergent people, and those with complex mental and metabolic needs — are minimized, mislabeled, or rushed through care that was never designed for them. Dr. Avery built this practice to change that.
Why Direct Primary Care
Direct Primary Care removes insurance-driven barriers so Dr. Avery can spend the time patients deserve. Instead of billing insurance for every visit, patients pay a simple monthly …membership that covers most primary care needs. This model enables longer appointments, easier communication, and thoughtful decision-making. Free from the constraints of fee-for-service billing and bureaucratic hurdles, Dr. Avery focuses on prevention, coordinated care, and treatments that address the whole person — not just isolated symptoms.
An Inclusive, Evidence-Informed Practice
At Wellness with Dr. Avery, care is inclusive, affirming, and grounded in both evidence and lived experience. She centers dignity, shared decision-making, and cultural responsiveness in every patient interaction. Her approach is trauma-informed and anti-racist, and she prioritizes clarity, transparency, and respect. Patients receive coordinated support for chronic conditions, metabolic health, and mental health, with flexible accommodations for neurodivergent needs.
What to Expect
Patients can expect longer visits, same-day or timely communication, collaborative treatment planning, and clear guidance on referrals and specialty care. Services include comprehensive primary care, preventive care, women’s health and reproductive counseling, neurodiversity-affirming approaches, and chronic disease management with attention to metabolic and mental health integration.

this doctor is a nice lady. She’s very interested in helping. She has good answers to things and when you ask questions she’s very good at explaining situations and possibilities. I am in the hospital in Charleston and she is the hospitalist I think. She has come in with another doctor/nurse and has answered questions and has given me information that I’ve asked for. I would not be to critical of some doctors because everybody’s got a different personality. I’m not asking her to be my buddy I’m asking her to help me with my medical issues. I think she’s fine I think she’s good and she’s doing her job and so I cannot complain at all. She has been helpful so that’s what I needed. Thank you guys.
