If I could give 0 stars, I would. He ignored vital questions my 19-year-old daughter had about nocturnal seizures after she developed them in her 3rd semester of college . She told him she didn’t think she needed the medication and complained of feeling sleepy all the time. What he didn’t know was that she was a soccer MVP who, after graduating from UVA, spent time in Argentina teaching English and playing lots of soccer, including in the BA Cup in Buenos Aires, 2011. As a result of her complete lack of knowledge or education about SUDEP, she was occasionally skipping doses of her Keppra for big games, never having any idea she was increasing her risk for SUSEP which we had never heard of. She senselessly died from SUDEP 7-1/2 years later. because this education was withheld from her by a total of.9 neurologists. She never could have imagined she was at high risk for DEATH as she was occasionally skipping doses of her Keppra before big games, unbeknownst to her father and I. … This is something she would NEVER have done if she had known this could lead to her death. The vast majority of these deaths are avoidable with proper education and MONITORING which is NOT optional!. Out of 9 neurologists she saw over 7-1/2 years, he was easily the worst. When I asked him if he could write a letter to my senator in support of a mandatory SUDEP education law in VA (he is in TN), his response was to have his office manager call me to tell me that my daughter’s death was “her own fault.” I am now a SUDEP advocate and member/volunter of the Epilepsy Foundation in VA after 29 years of working as a CCRN. Only 1 state (NY) mandates this life-saving education and about ~95% of neurologists withhold SUDEP education from their at-risk epilepsy patients. Look elsewhere for care and read everything you can about SUDEP.

I am a veteran. I served in the Marines and Army for more than a decade. My career was ended when I was struck by a drunk driver. I was referred to Nelson by the Department of Veteran's Affairs choice program. My care was supposed to be covered by the VA. At some point, this office had problems collecting payment from the VA so they sent my bill to collections. So now I am on the hook for $300 I don't owe, and I have a negative account on my credit report. I have tried calling but can't seem to get in contact with anyone. My next call will be to an attorney.

Prescribed medication and did not closely monitor side effects. Searching for a new doctor who has patient’s total health and safety in mind.

Very knowledgeable! He took his time. Dr. Nelson, had already reviewed my husbands history before he came into the exam room. Dr. Nelson took his time. He answered our questions. Highly recommend!

Shawn Nelson is a terrible doctor. He saw me 7-8 years ago. diagnosed me by just asking me a couple of questions. He never ran any tests, no MRI's, no blood work. NOTHING. My diagnosis was a serious matter. I have a nerve condition that he said over the counter pain medicine is all that would help it. BULL - this cranial nerve condition has a very high suicide rate because of the pain involved and ultimately later in years requires surgery. He never ever followed up with me in 7 years. If I needed a refill for Lyrica I was sent to a Nurse Practitioner in Kingsport. Really? A glorified Nurse? Why I waited as long as I did and suffered I have no idea but I now went to a REAL Neurologist and the first thing he did is take blood work and schedule a MRI which I had this morning. This is what is called treating a patient. Shawn does not care. He just wants the money. I was in pain prior to this new doctor and I called explaining I was in severe pain to Nelsons office (which I… had never done ever) and needed to get in. They set me a appointment a month and a half away. When I called to cancel the appointment and told the girl why. You could tell she could have cared less. Forget Shawn Nelson. Take my word for it. Do not go to this doctor if you are having issues go to anyone than him.
