Dr. Sheldon Rubenfeld, MD

I was a patient of Dr Rubenfeld for about 7 years. I have permanent hypopituitarism with a growth hormone deficiency and central hypothyroidism. Dr Rubenfeld diagnosed me with neither although I presented in his office with chronic low blood sugar from the growth hormone deficiency. I had to find a competent doctor to diagnose me. That was not Dr Rubenfeld. The damage that Dr Rubenfeld did to me was psychological. For no understandable reason, he asked if I was seeing a psychiatrist. Unfortunately for me, endocrine problems mimic psychiatric problems. My psych meds covered up my endocrine problems and delayed my diagnosis by decades. I became conditioned to being told nothing was wrong with me and that all my arguing to the contrary was pointless. I never stopped asking for help from doctors. I just never got it. I have struggled with speaking up and fighting for myself because I was denied proper healthcare for so long because of him and other endocrinologists. My past… endocrinologists ruined my life. My goal now is to always have a pituitary specialist so that I’ll be treated competently. It’s been a long road to recovery. I don’t know why it was so hard for Dr Rubenfeld to just listen to me.

My understanding is that he referred a lot of patients to a psychiatrist. Endocrine problems mimic psychiatric problems. My psych meds covered up my endocrine problems and delayed my diagnosis by decades. I became conditioned to being told nothing was wrong with me and that all my arguing to the contrary was pointless. Spent the entire appointment talking about himself and promoting his book.

Self righteous p.... who overcharges ($5,000 for 'special lab tests that should have been hundreds tops). Doesnt take insurance. Preys on desperate people, pushes his book, told us to solve husband's health issues we should get a divorce. Quotes scripture in his letters. Should have been sued and thrown out of the profession. A disservice to say he has any credentials.

Dr. Rubenfeld was condescending and confrontational. Did not listen at all. When his office called to deliver the test results, it was apparent that in our 20 minute doctor patient interview he had either not taken notes or completely disregarded them. Strangest part of my experience is that his verbal recommendation following the exam, blood work and ultrasound was counter to what he recommends in his book. Big waste of time and money!

He is a good MD and the staff is very nice , just be careful with the Mexican lady in the back, she surely doesn't know how to poke you... I got bruises in my arm for about a week..

Rubenfeld misdiagnosed me and I almost died. He was more interested in his book than looking at my symptoms. One look at the color of my skin and how off my thyroid panel was he would have figured out I needed a cortisol test. I called the office because I was getting worse and was told I "was having panic attacks." I know several other people who have has a bad experience with him. If reccommended, RUN!!! I had a great dermotologist who figured out something was not right and figured it out.

Dr. Rubenfeld did not listen to me as a patient and was very condescending. He determined that my issues were psychological (seems to be a common diagnosis for him). The next endocrinologist I saw smiled at my experience with this doctor and said that Dr. Rubenfeld was a "character" and a "businessman." I think he was being quite diplomatic.

This doctor is very good. I do not understand these people who say he is mean for suggesting therapy. I know that many people feel that psychiatric issues are stil "bad", but it is a valid question when trying to get to the bottom of a problem. Many of the problems people have when having thyroid problems are the same as mental problems. So take it as something good and trying to help you as a whole person. Not just popping into the room for 2 minutes, getting numerous tests and labs and having to call and leave a message with a front office person and having to call 3 times before you get an answer (and being rude to when finally called back). A real RN calls you back with test results and they try really hard to make you feel comfortable when waiting-they check up on you and let you know he is coming to you next. It may be expensive but I'd pay more for good service than less for horrible service!

I have been a patient for 11 years and Dr. Rubenfeld is clearly one of the finest physicians in the world.
