Dr. Shirley Manwah Fung, MD

I'm writing this review because Dr. Shirley Fung and her assistant made feel I wanted to cry after leaving her office. I was coming in because I wanted to receive a food allergy test. I wanted to find the root cause of my skin irritation/acne whenever I consume certain food. I have gone to other departments and was recommended to go see an Allergist which I did. I don't know much about allergy but Dr. Fung made me feel like I should know better. Her eye rolling, look-down-upon eye contact, and disingenuous engagement was so off-putting. I felt so uncomfortable in our 15 minutes interaction that I declined to stay for other testings when she offered. I've never had such an uncaring doctor. I believe she's smart and knows her stuff but arrogance and patronization are unacceptable. Her deflection of my serious concern made me feel even more lost. Her (grad?) assistant was better with bedside manners but came off very aggressive flexing her knowledge muscle. Avoid this office.

Saw Dr. Fung and in the middle of my appointment she walked out and left a medical assistant inquiring about my past allergies. When she returned, she didn’t even explain why she left and then asked me if I wanted to be tested for a specific food allergy... I said yes, then she asked me if I wanted to be tested for any other food allergies... when I said yes, she looked at me like I was crazy. I then told her it was her professional decision. I felt totally uncomfortable and couldn’t wait to leave that place.

My quick appointment took two hours because of the long wait. She didn't give me any answers. Kept talking off topic. Condescending. Will not return.

This was not one of the better interactions I have had with a doctor. She barely introduced herself when she entered my office and did not introduce at all the nurse who accompanied her. This made me feel weird, that some random person was sitting in on my appointment. She then rolled her eyes at every response I gave, and stared into her laptop to try to avoid eye contact.Tthe whole interaction was embarrassing for me, like I wasn't giving her the straight forward answers that would have made her job easier. So then she told the nurse to do a PFT, and didn't tell me what that meant--what it was, why I needed it and what it would measure. These minor explanations are not only appropriate, but also for someone who is educated enough to understand the rationale, I would like to be treated as such. She then didn't walk me through the rest of the visit. A better doctor would have said, "Ok, let's check your breathing, sorry, this stethoscope might be cold." She just ripped my… shirt up and told me to breathe. It was awkward and she made zero effort at rapport which made me even less forthcoming with information, as my responses made her roll her eyes in front of me several times. Then when the results of the scratch tests came in, I asked her, "So how severe is this allergy?"And instead of telling me what the scratch tests on my back read, she said, "Well you're the one who should be answering that question because you're obviously the one who can't live with these symptoms." WOW. This was an allergy which I didn't think was severe or worsening or even relevant (bc it had been years since I learned of it in a blood test and back then the result was minor at best," She then accused me of never telling her about the bloodwork, but to be fair, she never asked. I had a number of other questions, and as a lay person, I sought her expertise, no the other way around, but she just shrugged at me and I got no answer. It was an all around painful interaction and she acted high and mighty, showed no empathy or even a modicum of respect for me. Don't waste your time with this person.

Dr Fung is great as long as you don't mind waiting well over an hour to see her after checking in.

Dr. Fung is not a caring doctor. She talked to me in a condescending manner. Will never use her again. The nurses were quite nice though.
