Dr. Shona K Rabon, MD

She is a horrible doctor that doesn't respect anyone's time or efforts to see her. I switched out of her group because she was so bad.

I am surprised to read these reviews about Dr. Rabon. My daughter is a type I diabetic (as am I for 28 years). My daughter is also a straight A student... just a pretty good kid but she hates her disease (as did / do I). She is not as vigilant as she should be and Dr. Rabon does not sugar coat the risks and complications that can occur. Using myself as an example... Diabetic retinopathy. I have to remind my child that it is okay to hate your disease, IT SUCKS, but you have to take care of yourself. It's okay to not want it and to cry but it will only hurt our body more if we do not check the sugars regularly and dose correctly as much as possible. That being said, when her A1C is showing improvement, it is celebrated by Dr. Rabon as well as the NP's we have seen. Back when I was diagnosed there were two endocrinologists taking patients in Austin and both were focused on adults. While very good physicians, they were cold to me, not kid or teen friendly at all! So I guess… having experienced that, I have perspective. Unfortunately we have had to see more than just an endocrinologist by way of specialists at Specially for Children. While I may not LOVE all of their bedside manners, I do appreciate their education and the over the top care for our kids as well as nephew... from Dr. Rabon to allergy to gastroenterology to nephrology to oncology! I would gladly take a doctor that may not always make us smile but will ALWAYS treat whatever condition is presented at the time to the very best of his or her ability. I had a pcp once that always stated "practice" when he spoke of medical care. I asked him once why and he said because it is ever changing. There should always be questions and never trust a doctor that does not have a ton of books in their office to reference. Based on having to get my kiddos medical records over the years for various reasons, I am able to attest that these doctors talk to each other! If they have doubt or moments of concern for a symptom showing, for whatever reason, they will go to their peers and other specialists to get insight on what they are seeing. I have read it first hand. So sorry for others negative experiences but in this day and age I would always advise to err on the side of perspective.

Dr. Rabon's office is nearly impossible to reach. Every time I have called I was put on hold for 15-45 minutes. You have to make appointments 3-4 months in advance and God forbid you have to change it should something arise. She is still accepting new patients but cannot seem to handle her current workload. Even more importantly, Dr. Ramon's bedside manner is very lacking. Every time we have seen her, she is so tactless and wants to instill fear of chronic health issues related to my daughter's type 1 diabetes - she has made us cry every time! My daughter just turned 15 is a star athlete in multiple sports, is responsible and eats very healthy. She is also an A student. YES there is always room for improvement, but Dr. Rabon seems to get pleasure from making my young daughter afraid and feel worthless and make her cry - every time! In a positive note, this doctor has an excellent staff of friendly nurses and physician assistants. We are always relieved to be seen by on of her… PA's instead of the doctor herself... Those have always been nice and professional and not condescending like Dr. Rabon. I DO NOT recommend Dr. Rabon to anyone unless you want your child to feel afraid and upset every time you take them to see her!! She has no heart or tact!!! I think she feels good about making us cry!
