Dr. Sophie Helene Shabel, MD

I saw Dr. Shabel for close to 4 years. I thought I trusted her but when I came to her about concerns I might have endometriosis (after 4 years of recurrent miscarriage), she told me my symptoms weren’t endo symptoms (they are) and that endometriosis doesn’t increase your risk of miscarriage (it most certainly does). She denied me access to care so I paid out of pocket to see a specialist who diagnosed me with endometriosis. Also her only option if I it did have it was to go on birth control but I have since been informed by 2 specialists that this is outdated and uneducated medical advice. I quickly moved doctors and do not recommend her. Endometriosis affects at least 10% of the female population and an OBGYN should know at least know the basics around this disease. I regret trusting her for so many years.

If it's possible to request an OBGYN at Highland Hospital, I will request Dr. Shabel for my next birth. Wonderful doctor. Incredibly professional and caring, went above and beyond.

Dr. Shabel is the chief of the Gynecology department at Highland Hospital but somehow does not know how to perform the basic procedures required of her specialty. She routinely requires assistance from more junior attendings, does not perform any of her clinical work in a timely or competent manner, and is just generally negligent. For your own safety, stay away and report her.

Dr. Shabel did surgery for me a couple of years ago and I still think of her with great respect and fondness. She is thorough, very knowledgeable, and warmly human. You couldn't ask for better.
