Dr. Spencer R Amesbury, MD

I too have a mental illness. I had a long bout of trouble swallowing but before even checking it out he essentially told me I was imagining it. I went on my own to a throat doctor so he throughly checked it out - no problem was found. I eventually had to go to a gastro doctor on another matter. He did an upper GI and I was told I was having esophageal spasms which made it hard to swallow and stretched the esophagus and my problems went away. But I did this on my own with no help from dr amesbury

He once told me I had metas tic bone cancer and ordered another test. I waited four restless days to find the results I finally called and told them I wanted my results. He called me three days later and said "oh that was just a shadow on the x Ray". He really jumps the gun on making his diagnosis

Dr Amesbury is pleasant but Linda G is very difficult to work with.

We were referred to Dr. Amesbury because my husband was having memory problems. He order an evaluation and we had an MRI which showed nothing. When we went back into his office for the results he brought his wife in and address my husband and myself. He announced that my husband had Alzheimer's Disease. We were both crushed of course and heart broken. I asked for a follow up visit with Amesbury. At that time he told me that he was 95% sure that my husband did have the disease. He told me to get our things in order. He told me that my husband would not know me in 5 years and that in 10 he would be dead. This man is a GP, not a psychiatrist, neurologist or does he have an advance degree in disorders of the mind. He has no credentials to make such a definite diagnosis. This was 6 years ago. My husband is still working and a functional human being. To say the least, he has devastated our lives with his opinion. We saw three more specialists who all said that the tests did not… indicate Alzheimer's, possibly mild cognitive impairment that may or may not get worse. With further treatment and investigation we now realize that this was totally inappropriate for him to make such a claim. I hope you and your wife read this Spencer. Don't ever do this to another couple again. You are in over your head.

Dr Amesbury is cordial but businesslike. If you have a mental illness, he will attribute most of your ailments to that. But if you came in bleeding or wheezing he was very good at finding you the proper treatment. Otherwise he sent in his social worker. When I had an HMO his referrals were always backdated because he never got them done on time.I would recommend this doctor only if you have no signs or mental health issues in your lifetime. And he seems to be working more to provide less referrals , my hunch is that insurance companies like him as well Dr Amesbury is great for some but not for all
