Dr. Stephen John Bishop, MD

My son was a patient of Dr. Bishop a few years ago. He was able to convince Dr. Bishop to give him a medication which was not good for my son. It actually caused him to speak rapidly and non-stop. When I spoke to Dr. Bishop about this, he ignored my requests not to give it to my son. It was also a medication (Adderall) highly sought out by other teens. Dr. Bishop once prescribed him 270 pills. On 2 occasions I spoke to Dr. Bishop about the impact this medication was having on my teenage son, and was ignored. A year ago, we had to put my son into a treatment center (for more than just the problems mentioned), and part of the response was that the Adderall Dr. Bishop had been prescribing caused my son to have more problems than he started with. I am also angry that my son was put on 2 medications for about 6-7 years with Dr. Bishop. During that time, my son was having problems getting out of bed and functioning. When I brought these concerns up, Dr. Bishop kept telling me that… my son needed therapy as well. We struggled with that, but I did get him to go on Dr. Bishop's advise. Never once did Dr. Bishop consider a change in meds, no matter how much we let him know that our son was not functioning well, even when I requested we try a change. I wish that I had realized sooner that I should have gone to someone else who would have listened to me.

Not a good fit for children and teens. Can't make eye contact with his adolescent patients. Has no problem in sending them to hospitals where patients have died. Has no clue in how to help children with autism.

I am a physician, and know how difficult it is to find a well trained, preeminent clinical and hospital based psychiatrist--who is sophisticated in his understanding of the interactions of psychiatry, general medicine, and real life. Dr. Stephen Bishop has treated me for nearly 16 years with compassion and outstanding care--both in and out of the hospital. He has the ability to relate to a patient, while maintaining the requisite professionalism. Many years ago, my condition necessitated my needing longterm care at a top national private psychiatric facility. Dr. Bishop's care for me, is far superior to any other I received at this facility, Colorado psychiatric hospitals when I was not under Dr. Bishop's care, and in any other clinical practice. Dr. Stephen Bishop is one of the best doctors I have ever had, in my 57 years of life. All physicians who meet him, should be inspired to achieve the level of care for their patients, which he provides for his own.

I've consulted several psychiatrists during the 27 years I've lived in the greater Denver area; for 19 of them Stephen Bishop has been my doctor, helping me to manage an extremely difficult psychological disorder. He has done so with greater effectiveness and compassion than any psychiatrist or clinical psychologist I have seen: more than a dozen in my 62 years. Dr. Bishop is a polymath, able to access knowledge of many different fields during our discussions. His knowledge of psychology, psychiatry, and neurology surpasses that of many doctors I have consulted, and I myself hold a master's degree in psychology (making me a difficult patient to treat). His knowledge of psychopharmacology is up to date and impressive. He is an expert at what he does, and I know many psychiatrists who can't truthfully make that claim. What impresses me most about Dr. Bishop is not his skill at his profession, however. He is a good man: kind, caring, firm when he needs to be, honest, generous, and… fair. He delivers bad news with understanding and compassion, and still has a sense of humor I find remarkable in a man who must deal with so many lost souls. He works as hard as any psychiatrist I have ever known, a sign of his dedication to his patients and his profession. I would not hesitate to recommend Dr. Stephen Bishop to anyone, young or old, in need of psychiatric help. Perhaps there are a few better psychiatrists than he, but I haven't met them, and no matter how depressed or anxious I may be, Dr. Bishop finds ways to lighten my burden and even make me laugh. Not many people can do that, but Stephen Bishop is a very unusual man.

Called and left numerous messages and never received a call back. I was going out of the country and needed more meds...never heard from him andam now in a 3rd world country without my meds. Nothng like having a mental moment while 6K miles away from home. Think I'll change Doc after almost 20 years. Sad.
