Dr. Stephen Eugene Buie, MD

I was hospitalized for five years where Dr. Buie was my doctor. I was avoiding life, because quite frankly I sucked at it on my own. I managed to avoid that little caveat for five years under the watchful eyes of many. I created my own little environment in the office, where I had a very fragile existence in an environment that was less than healthy. The only thing I can think of that would have been better for me at the time, would have been someone that said bluntly, let's not look at the past so much but lets focus on what you want to do tomorrow, and the tomorrow after that. Psychiatry and psychology spend so much time analyzing the past that they steal the future. He's a great doc, but he missed the point of life.

I've seen Dr. Buie for almost 10 years. I'd been misdiagnosed for 13 years at the time that he first met me. Dr. Buie was the first doctor who explained my symptoms, as well as the most accurate diagnosis, in a way that was consistent with my personal experience. For this reason, I trusted him immediately and I always have, with respect to his judgments regarding medication. His initial choices of medications have remained the same over the 10 years. Dr. Buie did try some other things along the way, but his first choices turned out to be the best for the long-run. Over the years, I've become stable, he's been able to reduce my medication doses, and he's taught me to be independent in ways with prn medications that most doctors would want to control. That is, I view it as positive that Dr. Buie has given me ways to manage my disorder so that I do not have to make extra appointments for minor adjustments. Some people who've commented about Dr. Buie's non-responsiveness are… likely picking up on this. If you need to see a psychiatrist often or need to make an immediate appointment, he's not a good doctor for you in that way. I work out many issues in therapy, and I accept that, for myself, there are certain limitations in terms of maximizing psychiatric medications. I get the sense that that is also Dr. Buie's approach, which might not be in sync with some patient's expectations. I agree with one of the reviews below: if you aren't willing to do what he asks you to do, he'll tell you that he can't help you. In a way, this is ethical. It's not right for psychiatrists or any doctor to keep treating you, knowing that they're not helping you or not likely to be helpful to you, for whatever reasons there may be. Different people need different things. Much of psychiatry is a goodness of fit between patient and doctor. I think that the upside is that, with some doctors, such as Dr. Buie, you'll know right off if it's going to work out or not. I prefer that to muddling along, as I've done in the past, not knowing if my doctor was helping me or not.

unresponsive, uncaring. I would not choose him again, nor would I recommend any friends/potential patients to him.

Dr Buie would not return any phone calls nor emails even though I was in such distress that I was in bed literally for six weeks. The medication that he had me on definitely was not working and I told him exactly what was going on during a visit to his office. He literally said to me that if I did not continue taking the medicine that he had prescribed for me that I needed to see another physician. Well I did and am doing great now. By the way I know of another person who was in distress and he literally hung up on her.

I've been a patient of Dr. Buie's for many years. Although he has overseen me mainly for medication monitoring and prescription dispensing, he connected me to a wonderful counselor with whom I spent about 1 hour per week for?? about 1 year. Between the 2 professionals, I've been stable mentally for nearly 20 years. IF I DO NOT DO WHAT DR> BUIE SAYS FOR ME TO DO, like take my meds as he orders, I'll get sick. My advise to anyone who searches the internet for their medical treatment, is to say, that if you don't have a medical degree, don't try to tell Dr. Buie what your treatment should be. I often didn't listen and found out that if I did the listening, Dr. Buie could help me. PS I hate gatorade!
