Dr. Stephen S Falkenberry, MD

A number of years ago, I was diagnosed with breast cancer. Three of my woman doctor friends sent to an accomplished surgeon at The Miriam. My gynecologist (Kathryn Cassin) told me that I had to see Dr. Falkenberrry, the only surgeon in R.I. to use a procedure called Sentinal Node Biopsy. Since I have an impaired autoimmune system, Dr Cassin did not want my lymph nodes removed unless the cancer had spread into them. After meeting Dr Falkenberry, I cancelled my other surgery. My nodes were not involved, and my recovery from the surgery was virtually pain free. I have been cancer free for 19 years. He is the best.

Diagnosis was wrong, overall not a good experience. To someone this busy means you are just a file. Above all, check the physician's costs prior to exam.

I was in shock with my diagnosis and I just plowed through to have my surgery and I accepted the lack of bedside manner in the doctor and his office staff. I believe he probably is an excellent surgeon; and I thought that was enough - for me, it was not; my thinking, now, is a treatment center with a team approach for cancer patients where you get centralized care and the whole person is looked at. You get empowered and can move ahead maybe better than before. That's where I am at now. I believe women should consider support with their diagnosis and connect and then make a decision. I've always advocated for my family, my dad, and I didn't follow my own rule of not being the patient and the advocate.

Complaint of breast pain several years ago. He assured me through ultrasound that I do not have breast cancer. He also said I had very dense breasts. He unwillingly aspirated a small cluster of cysts because I said it had to be something. He made me think it was all in my head. No follow up required.Fast forward: Two years ago. Breast cancer, surgery, chemo, radiation etc. Today it has recurred and now its stage 4 inoperable and incurable. My opinion: He needed to order an MRI. I had a complaint of pain and it needed to be addressed.

I first met Dr. Falkenberry in 2003, from the moment I met him I knew I was in good hands. I had surgery today with him. Dr. Falkenberry is brilliant, skilled, kind, and has a great bedside manner. I would recommend him without any reservation.
