Dr. Stephen John Haines, MD

I saw Dr. Haines for a congenital neurological condition that is allegedly among Dr. Haines' specialties. Monitoring the condition requires annual scans and follows up with a neurosurgeon. When I saw Dr. Haines he didn't order a single scan, spent 10 minutes reviewing my history (which includes complications from this condition) and did a brief exam before telling me to come back in 3 years. Hoping he is in fact retiring and that his successor provides better patient care.

His sincere interest in thoroughly studying my past surgery and imaging, as well as ordering new images that have never been done on my rare brain disorder has restored hope.

My son has been seeing Dr. Haines for 20 years. We are more than pleased.

Dr. Haines removed a malignant brain tumor from my daughter in 1984 and saved her life.

I suffered from Hemi-Facial Spasms for about 7 years. I could not smile and my face was beginning to droop on one side. I had to quit my job and stop seeing my friends. I was tired of the temporary relief of Botox, and I finally decided that surgery was my only permanent solution. That was a very scary decision because I had never had any surgery before. I researched surgeons for over a year - including the Mayo Clinic - before choosing Dr Haines at the U of M Hospital. When I first met Dr Haines I found he was a good listener and showed genuine concern about my situation. After he answered all my questions fully, he made me feel safe, and I knew I could trust and believe in him. I felt confident to be in his hands. He stopped in to see me just before I was taken into the surgery room to reassure me that he would take good care of me. Immediately after the surgery he visited with my family in the waiting room and described the procedure in detail and answered all their questions.… In the ICU, and later in recovery, his staff visited me frequently to check up on me. They were extremely dedicated and professional. Before the surgery my thought was that I would be very happy if I received 90% success in relieving the spasms. I now know I have 100% relief. In my mind Dr Haines is absolutely "My Hero"! I made the right choices to (1) have the surgery, and (2) choose Dr Haines. I could not have had a better experience with any other doctor - he is the best.

We can't thank Dr. Haines enough for taking the time to meet with us and explain my mother's options with regard to Trigeminal Neuralgia, a condition she had suffered with for over four years. After careful consideration, we collectively decided upon the Balloon Compression surgery. Dr. Haines did a fabulous job prepping us on the pre and post op expectations. My mother responded beautifully and is now, for the first time in many years, free from the constant pain of TGN. Dr. Haines is our HERO! It's true...Instead of a cape, he wears scrubs! Many heartfelt THANKS!

I would not send or recommend Dr.Haines, as he comes off as cold and unfeeling. He is very poor with explaining to the patient and answering questions

Stephen Haines and his friend Cornilieus Lamb looked at my scans which were not of the problem area and said to do nothing. Dr Haines said he will not give surgey when he can not predict the outcome. Since no surgey has a garantee of its possible outcome I though he would be giving up his practise in 2006. But what Stephen actualy meant is he will not give surgey on anyone he does not find "deserving" to be operated on. Dr Haines did not bother to order proper scans to see what was causing my problem and waisted over a month of my time.

I was referred to Dr. Haines by my Primary Clinic after an MRI showed that I had a Pituitary Macroadenoma. Several different physicians offered their expert advice on whether to remove the tumor or wait.Dr. Haines clearly laid out my options to me in terms I could comprehend, and I was therefore able to ask questions that were relevant to my diagnosis. This made it much easier to make an informed decision regarding my long term health care.I would highly recommend Dr. Haines to any patient.

I think that he is an amazing doctor, and the amazing things he can do. He could work on his bedside manners.
