Dr. Stephen Z Hull, MD

I have seen Dr. Hull for several years, at least and I find him to be an excellent doctor. Dr. Hull runs a Living Life Well program where he teaches about the nature of pain and how to deal with pain. He does not offer any magic remedies, but he listens very closely to what I say and it is good to be heard. Dr. Hull also runs a group for people who have been through the Living Life Well program. The group is every Monday and free of charge. I don't know of any other doctors that offer their time every single week for an 1.5 hours for free. Dr Hull is well educated and continues to educate himself in his field and beyond. He shares what he learns with the group and with me in individual appointments. If you are in pain, this is a very good doctor to consult.

I have been a patient of Dr. Hull for over 1 1/2 years. He has been instrumental in helping me understand my chronic pain (due to a boating accident). He has a program, Living Life Well, which made all the difference in not only understanding pain but helped me reduce my dependency to Opiates by 90%. He cares about my successful reduction of medications all the while monitoring your wellness. I am grateful for my PCP for getting Dr. Hull into my life. My quality of life has improved through the reduction of the meds.

Dr. Hull is not going to fix all your problems, so if thats what you are looking for, go elsewhere. He is going to push you to take care of yourself, which is ultimately what we have to do. Dr. Hull is constantly educating himself on the newest interventions and science in the pain world. He can be direct which can be taken as uncaring, but he is on of the most caring and responsive Doctors I have ever had: and I have had quite a few since my chronic pain started over 10 years ago. If you want a quick fix, good luck with that because there are none. If you are trying to find a doctor who will help you help yourself, he's your man.

Dr Hull is one of my favorite doctors. I have several specialists and many health conditions, so I've spent several years building relationships with great physicians. It's Like a family at the Mercy Health Care system and would highly recommend Dr Hull as a pain management specialist. He is constantly trying to find new and innovated ways to treat pain and stays up to date in the world of pharmaceuticals by attending seminars. Professional and caring, with an amazing staff as well! Solid A+!

Dr. Hull is one of the best physicians I have ever met. He is thoughtful and considerate and his medical knowledge is up-to-date (maybe state-of-the-art as far as helping patients live with chronic pain!). In addition to seeing him for medical care after interventional medical approaches ceased to be effective for me, I participated in his 12-week Living Life Well class at Mercy Hospital to learn strategies for managing my chronic pain. I also attend the alumni support group offered weekly at Mercy and find it very helpful in managing my symptoms. Dr. Hull provides excellent care and is well-regarded by other physicians whom I respect. It isn't often that physicians spontaneously offer praise for other providers, but that is what has happened to me on more than one occasion, as my other providers have told me how much they admire his knowledge and work ethic. I worked professionally in the medical field for over two decades and Dr. Hull is the epitome of an excellent physician. He also… has a great sense of humor, which is invaluable in medicine.

Dr. Hull has been helpful in teaching ways to understand pain and techniques that can help reduce symptoms.

Dr. Stephen Hull is among the very few exemplary doctors I've ever had, and as a PTSD chronic pain patient, I've had many many doctors over the past thirty years. Dr. Hull is a treasure. His knowledge of medicine, the broad range of drugs and their appropriate applications, and the physiology of pain and how we experience it, is encyclopedic. His program at the pain clinic at Mercy Hospital, provides specific and practical tools for understanding pain, and for managing it, to the purpose of participating in life more fully. I'd been trying to get rid of my pain for years, trying literally dozens of treatment modalities with no success. In the year and a half that I've been part of Dr. Hull's program, (classes twice a week and support/discussion group once a week), my life has expanded exponentially. I still have some pain, but Dr. Hull has enabled me to have a rich and rewarding life anyhow. In the course of this journey, Dr. Hull has demonstrated over and over, his respect for his… patients and for our struggles. He is open about his own efforts to manage pain, and is in effect part of his own program. He sets a good example for the rest of us. His personal and professional integrity, as I have witnessed these last eighteen months, are beyond reproach. I have been shocked to read the disparaging remarks some people have posted about him. I hope they find relief somewhere, but I think Dr. Hull is not the appropriate target for their disappointment. I am deeply grateful for what he has given me, and continues to give. I have been with Dr Hull 3yrs now. I have had many pain specialists, and find Dr Hull very compassionate, caring, and understanding. Yes he gives me pain meds. He is careful and measured in treatment plans. Which is great, the last thing I want is to be dependent on pain meds.... Trust me. I attended his pain class, and attend his group class. It's nice to take with other pain patients about how their lives are going and what is working for them. There is no magic cure or treatment for pain......bummer! Dr Hull uses many different techniques to treat pain in a balanced way. He kindly challenges you to be a better you!

Dr. Hull is the hardest working, most caring pain doctor I’ve had. He understands my condition and is working hard at finding me relief and help. Plus he runs a group for his pain patients which is so helpful and supportive!

I did the 3 month 3 times a week class for help with my pain issues. It was a very nice class. The other people were open and friendly and encouraging. I decided while taking the class, to decrease my opiate dosage which I did. It was great to have support while I was doing this. I cut my opiate dosage by more than half and then said enough. Though Dr. Hull continues to encourage me to come totally off the meds, I haven't. I know when I've taken too much and decreased, I also know that it's not a good time to totally quit. My pain has gotten worse because there's been more deterioration in my joints but I continue to only take the lower dose of pain med.He has never refused to order my meds, quite the opposite, he has gone out of his way to make sure I have enough when I go on vacations. He is pleasant but also firm about the opiates I take. We have a written contract that I will only take the amount prescribed and there would be no early refills. That's the law which is… strictly enforced. I go to his Monday evening classes occasionally for encouragement and to encourage others.
