Dr. Stephen Sean Luther, MD

Dr. Luther is a great physician and I am fortunate to have his as my primary care doctor!! Very caring and all around terrific individual!! Has a new office space with many in-house services at convenient easy access location. Unlike so many other doctors on Hilton Head Island, he is NOT going concierge.

I agree 100% with the negative comments about their terrible front office. I too have left numerous phone messages but have never received a callback. In 2017, I had a physical and received a notice that I needed a prescription. I left numerous phone messages without receiving a reply. The result was that I stopped trying to get ahold of their office and never did get my prescription filled. I have been trying to schedule another appointment to take care of my issue, and sadly am having the same lack of response. The doctors creed is to do no harm. Their office does not want to return my many calls, and is most certainly doing me harm.

When I first met him, I recommended him to everyone. I thought he was very caring and competent, but medical care in this country has changed and so has he. When going for an annual physical, you now spend most of your appt. time with his nurse, aka "the scribe." She approves, or not, any questions you plan to ask him. She (and last time a second person) are always in the room which is awkward if you want to discuss anything of a delicate nature with him. I feel like the nurse is a gatekeeper or "the boss," and again, it would be embarrassing to discuss that fact with him! He spends about 5 mins. with you, brandishing his stethoscope and looking in your ears and nose and is abruptly out the door. He used to chat and seemed to care about you as a person. It's now very cold and regimented. The office staff, with one exception... Linda... has always been awful but he used to be worth it. If you need to call the office now and speak to someone, don't bother. You will go through the… frustration of an extensive phone menu and will not get through. You now have to communicate through a patient portal. (I wonder how that's working for older patients who may not be that technologically savvy.) If I'm sick, I want to see my doctor or at least speak to someone, not send an email and wait ad nauseum with no idea of when I might get an email back. (Good luck on a Friday! It's going to be a looong weekend.) This can leave you with no choice but to use the ER for things your GP should be handling, something I thought the medical community was trying to discourage. Urgent Care is starting to look like a better choice if you need to see Dr. Luther for anything other than a rudimentary physical. As for that patient portal, a lot of the information in mine is incorrect, and other doctors have access to that misinformation. Dr. Luther is now on the board of Hilton Head Hospital. Maybe he no longer has the time to be your doctor.

I have been going to Dr Luther for several years now. Although I like the Dr the office staff leaves a lot to be desired. They are absolutely awful at the simple things like refilling a prescription request or just answering simple questions. Unfortunately this area does not have enough good Doctors to leave and go to another DR.

He’s a great doctor. Be prepared to wait. Have been going for annual wellness exams, but this year’s was billed incorrectly. Double dipping. Office manager would not resubmit. Honestly have not ever had a pleasant experience with their office staff. Will not return.

I scheduled a yearly physical with Dr. Stephen Luther, drove 25 minutes there and waited in the waiting room for 15 minutes, but then the receptionist called me to the window and said Dr. Luther won’t see me because I have not previously come in for a let’s-go-over-your-chart visit. I said, “What? You mean, even though you scheduled this visit, he won’t see me until I pay to come in, shake his hand, he looks over my chart, I go home, call again, wait another week or two, then come back in???” His nurse said, “Yeah, that’s our policy.” I said, “Then, why did you schedule this appointment? It seems to me if you scheduled the appointment, you should honor it.” The receptionist said, “I’m sorry, but that’s our policy.” Really? Their office makes the mistake, I drive 25 minutes there, 25 minutes home, wait in their waiting room for 15 minutes, so what, Dr. Luther can collect the money for an extra office visit? It seems to me, that a doctor who cares about his patients,… would place his patients above his policies instead of waste an hour an a half of their time because of his own mistake. I even asked him to call me so we can talk about it, but he never called.

He is compassionate and efficient

Yes, you have to wait to get a first appointment for a thorough exam. Check-ups are scheduled in 2-3weeks. But when I am sick, he sees me in under 24 ...
