Dr. Stephen V Mallernee, MD

I'm writing this review because I believe there aren't enough bad reviews of these criminal doctors and that has to change. Note that this doctor has already been involved with two lawsuits. He is indirectly responsible for the death of one patient. This occurred around 2009. I came in for severe abdominal pain. Dr Mallarnee walked in after I had waited some time in this small examination room. He began by stating that he was "confused" about something on my record, the fact that I had (coincidentally) an appointment today with another doctor. I told them this was an error and that I had canceled the appointment and for some reason that was not done. (Keep in mind that all of this time he knows that I have reported severe abdominal pain.) However, he continued to press the issue even after I gave him a clear explanation, as if that somehow was not enough for his understanding. After that was finally settled he then brought up this topic of the MRI scan which I have no real idea how he… got on to. He was saying something like that we don't do MRI scans for such conditions, and that what I need is a CT scan. I suppose the nurse jotted down that I suggested an MRI scan, but I had no idea that my suggestion was going to be presented formally to the doctor. But his whole attitude was quite condescending, and mind you, also wasting precious time, both for me and also for other patients as well. The third issue he dealt with came about when I asked if I would be able to see my gastroenterologist (who works in the same hospital) as my issue could have been gastroenterological. (I get regular pain from ulcerative colitis in the exact area I was having the pain. It later turned out to be kidney stones, caused most likely from excessive calcium supplement use.) His response to my suggestion was "We dont do that." I thought well, that's fair enough, but I was confused because the secretary or nurse that answered the phone in the gastro dept said that they can do that, at least in certain situations. And it was not simply this error which he, in conjunction with the hospital made, but his attitude, which seemed to insinuate my stupidity, and I don't care for that type of insinuation. And as I said, the doctor wasted precious time. He was very unprofessional, even for a doctor not in an emergency room setting. I would suggest that he be removed from his position as an emergency room physician. But in all honesty, considering his past history with medical malpractice, and this incident, the revocation of his medical license I think should be considered. Thank you for your attention.

On Thursday afternoon, when I arrived to the Emergency Room of Tulane University Medical Center in New Orleans, I was most blessed by having Stephen Mallernee, M.D. as my ER doctor. He examined my injuries thoroughly and with a lot of attention on details. It was obvious that he has decades of experience practicing as an Emergency Room physician. In spite of his seniority, Dr. Mallernee consulted at least three other ER doctors and the vascular surgery team. He carefully listened to their opinions. Dr. Mallernee was concerned about the high level of creatine kinase (CK) in my blood. He wanted to see whether this level would go up or down. Therefore, Dr. Mallernee asked me to come back the next morning. When my wife and I arrived on Friday morning, my blood was drawn again, and the CK level was significantly lower. Although it was not at the normal level yet, it was moving in the right direction. This is what Dr. Mallernee expected and wanted to see. An appointment with the… vascular surgeon, Nicolas Zea, M.D. and his residents, Dr. Zorn and Dr. Shelton, followed. Two experienced vascular ultrasonographers, Sierra and Leisi, performed the ultrasound Doppler studies on my leg. Although no clot was found, Dr. Zea recommended to admit me to the Tulane Medical Center as an inpatient, for the weekend, and to put me on Heparin blood thinner. Dr. Mallernee came to my room in the Emergency Department to say that he agrees with this decision. Dr. Stephen Mallernee, or Dr. Mall for short, is the ideal doctor you want to have by you side when you arrive in an Emergency Room. He has a wealth of experience, but he consults with other doctors and attentively listens to their opinions.
