Dr. Stephen Proskauer

At first, Dr. Proskauer was very kind and I appreciated that he did his best to work with my busy schedule. He treated me for my ADHD and I especially liked that he helped me identify the multiple facets of my personality. However, towards the end of my treatment with him Dr. Proskauer had become noticeably annoyed and uncooperative — with all signs of professionalism completely dissipated. After changing insurance policies for the year, I told him that I will be transferring my care elsewhere since I would no longer be able to afford seeing him, cutting our time together short. Soon afterwards, Dr. Proskauer had gone out of town but confirmed in writing that my records would be transferred to my new clinic by a specific date. As that date came, my new clinic had still not received my records and I was unable to fill my prescriptions. I decided to stop by Dr. Proskauer’s office to follow up on the medical records request sent by my new clinic. Instead of being met with general… courtesy, Dr. Proskauer was frustrated, explaining that because his cat had just died that it could take several weeks for my new clinic to receive records from him. Dr. Proskauer began to share his frustration with my cancelled appointments and rescheduling, which I can imagine must have been difficult, but handled the situation unprofessionally regardless of the circumstance. After I rebutted his excuses and dismissed his unprofessionalism, I explained that I was searching for a seamless transition out of his care. After he accepted that I all I need is my records transferred, he gave me a random number of his “secretary” to coordinate the fulfillment of my new clinic’s medical records request. I would like to mention that this conversation occurred in the middle of the patient waiting room. Although there were no patients there, general courtesy would suggest that our dispute should have occurred in private since we were discussing sensitive information. I can’t imagine how awkward the receptionists must have felt listening in to this conversation. With today’s technological advancements, medical records are able to be transferred within moments. I’ve worked in multiple offices dealing with medical records requests, some take longer than others but some were returned within 24 hours. Anyway, unless you plan on seeing Dr. Proskauer for the rest of your life, I suggest that you don’t. Transitioning out of his care has been a nightmare.

Diagnosed me as Bipolar in midst of out of control anxiety due to tapering an rx too quick; hx of Major Depression but used his own set of diagnostic criteria based on "experience" instead of the professional standard-the DSM. Prescribed me dangerously high levels of a highly sedative drug to point of ending up in ER. Tried to sell me his book - not professionally appropriate. Then when after 6-7 mos of entertaining possibility of bipolar, asked how we differentiate between talkativeness, distract ability, frantic activity of anxiety vs hypo mania. Instead of discussing, he flew of the handle for "questioning the diagnosis"

Excellent Psychiatrist with unusually rapport.

Difficulty w staying on task; uses his own vs the professional standard of diagnosis DSM-IV /V; over medicated me then not responsive to requests to safely taper; seems overly enamored w his own theory of bipolar and in my opinion (as a psychologist) seems to project a lot of his issues onto me at least; became hostile when wanted to discuss process by which he came to a complex differential diagnosis

Dr Proskauer Has been a blessing to me in many ways. He is willing to work with me on many levels and when it comes to treatment, He listens to what I think I need weather treatment or medication. I have been in need of a C-PAP machine because Ive had a bad case of sleep apnea for many years and it has gone untreated for decades. After realizing I wasn't responding to depression and bipolar medications he dug down and found my problem. I was in no way in a position to afford the machine and sleep study needed, so Dr. Proskauer went above and beyond to help me get what I needed. He is giving me his old C-PAP machine and is still working on getting the sleep study. He may well be saving my life! I can think of no other doctor that would be so dedicated to my treatment to do this and I am so greatfull. I would recommend Dr Proskauer to anyone serious about getting help.
