Dr. Stephen Selkirk, MD

As a consultant, Dr. Selkirk rejected my final appeal to Carefirst/CVS to allow me to stay on the same dose of the medicine I had taken for 7 years with no problem to treat my hypersomnia (excessive sleepiness) when Carefirst just decided one day to now allow any to get more than a certain number of capsules per month (in my case where I’d have to pay some $4k a year more out of pocket. He claimed it “wasn’t medically necessary” when it worked for 7 years, I tried many other drugs that failed, and he knew from speaking to my provider that nothing had worked but that medicine at that dosage. What makes it worse is he has no discernible training in sleep medicine at all! He works on MS and ALS - and my doctor is a neurologist who has 30 yrs experience and founded and has run a sleep center for 20 years. Yet HIS judgment is final. HE INTENTIONALLY DID THIS KNOWING RIGHT FROM MY PROVIDER HIS DECISION WOULD HAVE TERRIBLE CONSEQUENCES FOR ME. What kind of character and integrity does a… doctor like this have?

For those that are lucky enough to be under doctor Selkirk’s care, we are the lucky ones. He cares for his patients and is honest. He also is the only doctor within 200 miles that is a migraine specialist.

I would not recommend Dr.Selkirk. His bedside manner was poor. I did not feel valued or respected as a patient. I found his nurse and several of support staff to be unprofessional and rude. My last appt there-I waited over an hour for a follow up appt. The appt itself was only 10 minutes. The neurology department at ACMC is unorganized and disrespectful. Save your time and money and find a better doctor and facility.
