A Vermont native, Dr. South moved to North Carolina with his parents in 1973. He graduated from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro and from the Bowman Gray School of Medicine at Wake Forest University. He completed the University of Virginia internal medicine residency program in Roanoke, and subsequently a fellowship in Endocrinology at the University of Virginia, Charlottesville. He joined Guilford Medical Associates in 1992. He currently serves as a Clinical Professor of Medicine, UNC-CH, a medical director for the Diabetes Treatment Program at Moses Cone, and a medical director for Blumenthal Jewish Nursing and Rehab Center. He is a Fellow of the American College of Endocrinology and a Certified Clinical Densitometrist.

Dr. South is married and has two children. He enjoys travel, photography, and fly fishing.

Dr. South has been my private physician. His response time is consistently good. His assistant returns calls promptly and works very well to meet my needs. I’m completely satisfied with all aspects of care with him and his practice. I have complex long-term medical issues and he considers my total situation in treatment.

Called for an appointment on a Tues. voicemail stated they would get back with me in 48 hrs. - 4 days later no response called again given the run around this office is very inefficient so I'm taking my business elsewhere the office help should be fired again they should be fired there's no reason a patient should have to wait four days to speak with someone to get an appointment. Grrrrrrrrr

Dr South is an excellent doctor, possibly the best in the area. Unfortunately that gets lost under all the problems with the badly mismanaged office.

Absolutely a great Dr., I would recommend him for a diabetic. I have been one for 42 years. Sometimes getting an appointment to see him can be a challenge, but I guess that is because he is so good, so when you get an appointment with him you better keep it.
