Dr. Stephen Joel Winters, MD

Do not go see this older man. I seen him at UofL for years. Ignored blood work along with wrong estrogen levels that was really low. More then once his office he felt up on my chest. Even once exposed my breast to check my heartbeat ??. Stay far away from him

Dr. Winters is one of only a few endocrinologists in the Louisville area that will treat transgender clients for hormone replacement therapy. However, his actual practice is to attempt to undermine your goals. He accomplishes this by slowing your transition to a crawl. Unwarranted delays, tests that aren't relevant. He convinces you that he's right with information that sounds perfectly plausible to anyone who's not done any research on the topic. When I suggested the protocol that's outlined by "Center of Excellence for Transgender Health" at the University of California, San Francisco, he refused to consider it. He said flat out, "They're wrong." Eventually he will start you on hormones, once you jump through all his hoops. However he's going to start you on the lowest possible dosage. He will refuse to prescribe the other drugs you will need to see the results you're seeking. He will do this for as long as you'll keep coming back. This is not to mention the sexual abuse I… suffered at the hands of Dr. Winters. Without any warning and certainly without my consent, he lifted my gown and groped my genitals. He did this bare handed. Additionally, his line of questioning is widely inappropriate. He asked things like "What type of activities did my father and I do together when I was a child?" "Does my family buy into this?" His staff fellow also insinuated that I was not female enough, due to my jeans and t-shirt appearance. She made inquiries as to why I didn't shave my pubic hair and other grooming habits. To sum it up, there are far better doctors in this town. People who treat transgender clients like human beings. With honesty, integrity and respect. That's not what you will get from Dr. Winters.

Poor attention to detail. When I asked him for a copy of my lab work, he gave me a copy of the lab report that I brought to him instead of the more recent labs.
