Dr. Steven Arthur Burka, MD

Dr. Burka seemed tired of his practice. His staff is a big part of this rating. The staff is unprofessional and not courteous.

I found this doctor on Checkbook because the original referral couldn't see my partner quickly enough. I went along on the second visit, for the lab results, because English isn't his first language. After the visit, I felt very surprised that this was a doctor with good ratings. He kept us waiting 30 minutes after the appointment time, although the office was empty. He came in and out twice, without making eye contact or a greeting. Finally, he sat down, buzzed over lab results while muttering out loud, in mid-stream said he would explain all that in a minute... Once he looked up, he actually didn't explain any of what he had just read aloud, and only announced his diagnosis without explaining how he got there, told us it would require a particular medication, and said he wanted to refer to another specialization for second opinion on whether a particular biopsy was required. He was ready to get up and leave, and had never once asked if we had any questions. But we did ask --… about side effects of the dangerous medication he recommended, in that offhand way -- and it sure looked like he was annoyed by that. He listed all the most catastrophic side effects, and concluded by saying, "But you won't be taking it very long." He did not explain how long, in his world, is "long" and did not once explain ANYTHING about his diagnosis -- what the avowed disease entailed, whether life-threatening or treatable, how he reached that conclusion, nothing. And, oh, by the way, "kidney results are normal"....which contradicted the last test results and the very reason we were sitting there in the first place. He may be a good doctor for some, but we found that Dr. Burka was a really terrible communicator, neither informative nor a doctor who is a partner in your care. Either he was having a bad day, or he's always like that and people don't mind, or he's homophobic and didn't want to spend time talking with a same-sex couple.

very disappointed in Dr. Burka. let medical problems go too long. obviously not able to diagnose problems in time. it was too late.
