I reached out because I was experiencing a slightly elevated heart rate related to a known thyroid condition, and I asked if it would be possible to get a short-term beta blocker prescription (which I’ve received from doctors before for my hyperthyroidism diagnosis) until I’m able to see my endocrinologist as my appointment is still 2 months out. Instead of responding professionally, the provider laughed at me and made me feel foolish for even asking. I understand there are limitations in virtual care and that certain prescriptions may not be possible without in-person vitals — but there is no excuse for treating a patient with disrespect or ridicule. When someone is reaching out for help while scared and vulnerable, they deserve to be treated with compassion and professionalism. This experience left me feeling even more anxious and unsafe, and I would not recommend this provider based on how I was treated.
