Dr. Steven James Sutherland

A crown broke in December. Sutherland replaced it, Dec. 14, 2021 for $1444 (and I have insurance). The same tooth developed an abscess, so I went back to the office on Jan. 4, 2022 (the earliest they could fit me) with swollen face & pus-filled gums. Only the hygienist looked at me though Sutherland was present. When the hygienist asked him to take a look at my abscess, I could hear him tell her--"can't you see that I'm watching this?" Whatever he was watching--be it an Instagram video or dentist training video (who knows?)--couldn't he step away to look at the damage he did to my teeth, gums, and face? No. The hygienist drained & treated the abscess alone & made a third appointment for me. On Jan. 6, 2022, Sutherland told me that sometimes crowns won't work and I would need to lose the tooth and wear either a bridge or get implants. I opted for a bridge. He said the payment I already submitted for the botched crown would apply to the new work. He charged me another $2,585.60 (plus the… amount that my insurance paid). At that time, I was told that all my expenses were paid and no more would accrue. I received a temporary bridge and did not see the Dr. again for the remainder of my treatment. I returned on Feb. 3, 2022. I thought that I would be receiving my permanent bridge, but one of the hygienist said that because of my abscess, they couldn't order my bridge until I was fully healed, so now they finalized measurements & ordered the permanent bridge. On Mar. 17, 2022, I received my permanent bridge--which did not fit well & did not match my existing teeth in shape or color. At that point, I was so traumatized by this work that I moved on and decided that I would leave this business for a better office. A few months later, of course, I received a new bill of $1387.60. Surprise! This brought my total for a painful, long, and poor-quality bridge to $5,417.20 (plus whatever my insurance paid). When I called the office to say that I was repeatedly told that my balance was $0, the office workers told me that they didn't handle billing and that I would need to call another office, which I did but no one picked up. I left many messages through phone and email, but no one from either office would reply. I work fulltime and I take care of my mother who has advanced dementia. I have no time to visit the dentist office to address this new bill, but I will now find the time. However, no matter the result of that bill, I want to warn everyone out there--do not put your dental care into the hands of this dentist. He's a disaster to the wellness of your health, look of your smile, and stability of your bank account.

Dr Sutherland and his entire staff are one of the most caring and qualified group of professionals that I have encountered. I saw Dr Sutherland on Wellness tv and I made the right choice when I picked up the phone. I recommend Torrance Dental Arts and Dr Sutherland to every family in the South Bay Area.

Almost no wait. Started right away and got done a little early. The person cleaning my teeth was awesome. Very professional, kept me informed on what she was doing. She was able to schedule my next appt's right there while I rinsed with flouride. Very efficient, which is important to me

Carla was the best hygienist I've ever had. Very gentle, but also got in and cleaned my teeth well. The best part was how informative she was. I had no idea that I'd been flossing wrong all my life. I will recommend Carla to my friends and family.

Very friendly, professional and reassuring

Terrible. Staff doesn't seem to know who you are or why you're there from one appointment to the next. I had ongoing treatment and they just had no clue. One time, I had an appointment to see Dr. Sutherland, and the aide said if I wanted to wait a few hours, he could see me. A few times, the dental assistant tried to treat my problems---as if they were the dentist. There is a problem here. I can't put my finger on it but some sort of issue. You know the second you walk in the door.
