Dr. Steven Michael Williams, MD

I took my father to Mohawk Valley Retina to see Dr. Williams yesterday. He was coming in for a diagnosis of a retinal artery occlusion (he essentially suffered an eye stroke and is blind in one eye). His appointment was at 2:15, we were 20 minutes early, he wasn’t seen until 2:55! I was also told I couldn’t wait in the waiting room with him, per covid guidelines, however there were other accompanied patients. I complied. The woman at the desk said they would call my cell when my dad went back to see the doctor. No one called me. I texted my dad and went in to find he had already seen the doctor. I was upset, but figured I’d see what was going on. My dad told me the initial technician he saw was very rude and spoke to him as if he were a child. He said when Dr. Williams came in to see him he did so with his mask in his hand and proclaimed that he had already had covid! What?! He proceeded to check my dads eyes. Then left. So many red flags already. My dad then told me they wanted to… inject him with dye to check the veins of his eyes. My dad informed them in person, as we did on the forms we filled out, that he is allergic to dyes. The tech told him he wasn’t allergic to this dye! Again, what! She was trying to get him to sign a consent form for the dye that also listed possible side effects of the dye. My dad told her no! She was not happy at this and said she’d go inform the doctor. They then had him in the waiting room again, now it’s 3:45, waiting for photos of his eyes. The room where they do the photos of the eyes was empty! However, when we asked a tech she said there were two people ahead of my father for eye photos. At this point I’m pretty livid, and my father, who recently lost his sight and is dealing with enough is uneasy. I go to the front desk, because oddly enough with so many patients in both waiting rooms, there are no doctors or technicians to be found, and tell the woman at the desk we are not staying to finish the appointment. That we are not happy. To that we receive a reply of “okay.” That’s it?! This place was overcrowded, rude and unprofessional! This man comes to you because you’re supposed to be a specialist, he’s clearly been through a lot, and no one treats him with compassion or decency! I am truly appalled by the behavior of the staff. Please do yourself a favor and skip this place all together. I wouldn’t wish this kind of treatment on anyone!

I felt the staff and Dr. Williams was thorough in their work. I am confident that my vision and eye care are in good hands.

Dr Williams is an excellent Doctor with a wonderful team.

He misdiagnosed me, was extremely rude and unprofessional. I do not recommend this man

this was my first visit & im very pleased.

I went to him since i was about 5 years old and stopped when i was 18...my daughter is going to go to him now as well and i am so happy i was referred to him by another dr. In syracuse that i was not happy with. He is an awesome dr. And i know he will be great for my daughter as well.

after over an hour's wait the doc only spent 2 minutes with the patient and would only answer 2 questions and walked out telling us to ask his tech questions.

The doctors are wonderful. the wait is ridiculous. the women who answer the phones are down right unpleasant especially when trying to make an appointment or heaven forbid change one.

I have been under the care of Dr. Williams for about 12 months now, and I have nothing but nice things to say about the man - and Dr. Gale and all other staff members at MVR. I first came to MVR after another local ophthalmologist failed to accurately diagnose a serious condition resulting from a penetrating eye injury. Following two surgeries, and frequent and meticulous follow-up exams, Dr. Williams and his team have managed to restore my vision to a degree I never thought possible. I've read the few negative aspects of Dr. Williams' reviews, and for the most part believe them to be false. The only "negative" factor I can even marginally agree with is extended office visit wait time. But I would attribute this to the fact that he and Dr. Gale's services are in high demand as they are the only qualified vitreoretinal specialists in this area.

Wait was over an hour and a half after appointment time. Unacceptable. Other people in the waiting room said there is always over an hour late.
