Dr. Stuart Kevin Amateau, MD

My problem was from Gastric Bypass terrible nausea, infusions to get Neuritician in me. I read Dr. Amatau's Bio. I found his email and said I am not going to live much longer with this lack of nutrition. I emailed him and he immediately answered. He said you need help, I can reconnect thee gastic pouch back to the stomach again and get the neutriccian back in. I said I am in Virginia. and you are in Minneapolis. When can you get me in? Hee said Tuesday I will open a slot. His nurse however said you are going to have to wait a little longer than tuesday so I did, and he performed the surgery and I am off neutron infusions. Feel so much better. 9 months later, I returned for a replacement of the tube and it went just as easily as the first surgery.

Dont bother with this doctor. He blocks procedures you need or changes the care plan without your knowledge and doesnt inform you of the change. He and his care assistant megan lavity wont give you a nutritionist for a feeding tube and he wont monitor you in the hospital for refeeding syndrome. But he wont tell you that. He never sticks with your care plan and its up to you to find out if anything has changed. He will lie to your insurance company and say you dont need a procedure done without providing documentation to back up that statement even though he is the one that agreed to the procedure! They will also lie and say your insurance company denied coverage and dont think your smart enough to contact your insurance company to find out if thats true. Then you waste money for pre ops for procedures they had no intention of doing and thier bosses protect them and wont do an investigation. Then when they schedule a peer to peer review he wont pick up the phone so procedure gets denied… coverage and he lies and says they wouldnt pick up the phone but your insurance company was the one that called and he wouldnt pick up then lies in his notes. Then he wont accept your appeal. Then his team gives you an ultimatum tell them now your self pay for this procedure or we cancel your appointment. And they wont give you time to figure it out so they cancel your procedure and wont reschedule then you never hear from him or megan again on what next steps are.

Poor skill and bad experience

I feel so lucky to have been given the recommendation to see Dr Amateau. My local gastroenterologist called his team and they organized everything I needed to take care of an issue it seems most can not handle. Everything was smooth start to finish. Dr Amateau was professional, caring and most importantly skillful. We are planning a follow up visit to make sure Im doing as well as I am now. Finally.

Dr Amateau was the surgeon with the next available surgical opening when Zi need a "J" tube inserted into my abdomen for tube feedings. Dr Ikramuddin would have been my choice if given an opportunity to select my surgeon. Once the tube was insert he was gone! No hospital follow up, no discharge follow up appointments, and worse no help when problems arose. Infection 6 weeks post insertion... nothing, refused to see me, not my problem. Leakage 2weeks later... nothing More leeakage... an extremely quick office call to push the plate back down next to my skin. Out the door as fast as he entered. Leakage is out of control...3 weeks later his assistant scheduled me for a procedure 3 weeks later. The leaking was so horrible that my Primary Care physician ordered the tube to be removed not just shoved in further. Dr Amateau nevet examed my abdomen, looked at the leafsge, or even talked to me. Everytime I tried to get him to look at the proble I got "not my problem" Tube pulled,… leaking turned to pouring out. 12 seconds from mouth to hole. Dr Amateau refused to see me, "not my problem" Sent to wound care, there was nothing they could do. After seeing primary, Dr Amateau couldn't blow me off any longer. Had to wait for specialized equipment. Finally scheduled for a procedure 6 weeks later. No hospital follow up or discharge follow up appointments. Today I am on complete NPO, medication are administered through a NJ tube. No added fluids or formula through the NJ tube. I rely totally on TPN (1500ml with 1200 calories over 14 hours). Dr Amateau has not done any follow up through out this 7 month ordeal that left me a hole in my belly with a fistula that all need to heal before I can even start NJ tube feedings. He was completely hands off, passed the buck, blamed me, and totally ignored. I would never recommend Dr Amateau.
