Dr. Susan Elizabeth Mackinnon, MD

Dr. Mackinnon truly saved my entire quality of life. I had become disabled from a rare nerve disorder, which she caught and treated expertly. In regard to what others have shared with her "bedside manner," I have to argue that she was nothing but wonderful to me as I prepared for surgery, the aftercare, etc. When I woke up from surgery, she was talking to my aftercare nurse personally and even cried a little when she talked to me about what I had been dealing with and how glad she was that she believed it had been fully treated. This is the person who performed the VERY FIRST nerve transfer in human history, people. She is in high-demand, and her skillset is needed by many. She has to make decisions throughout her day as to whether or not her patient has a problem that requires her expert skills or if she should focus her attention on some else. It's hard to accept, but if someone else can help you as well as she can, she will probably refer you to someone else so she can find that… special patient that really needs HER. No, I only heard from her a couple of times after my surgery, but I think you will find that most surgeons are like that. They have played their part and hand you over to PTs and pain management experts who can take you from there. Dr. Mackinnon can be short in her conversations, but she is a world-class surgeon whose time equals healed people. I cannot recommend her enough. She took me from someone who couldn't operate a car and was in constant pain and I can say one year out that I am completely pain free and can do life again. I give God the glory and am so grateful for Dr. Mackinnon's part in my healing.

I have been here twice. I travel 45 min to get here. Both times I waited 90 min to get seen. Barely got a 100% parking pass to pay for looong parking for a looong wait.

Dr Mackinnon is definitely top notch in her field. However, like a few of the other reviews we experienced the same bedside manner. Once she decided that the surgery worked she pretty much dismissed my husband like he was a bother. We left the office confused and dismayed and wondering 'what the heck just happened here.' I strongly recommend her if you have nerve problems. However, don't expect much in her manners or after care.

I was honored that Dr. Susan Mackinnon took my case, performed surgery, and from that day forward, I have not have had any further pain. I Thank Dr. Mackinnon and her staff for taking care of me! Thank you All!!

Dr. MacKinnon is wonderful and does AMAZING work. She gave me function and feeling back in my arm.

Hi Susan, I don't know if you remember me but in 1984 I was involved in a motorcycle accident and after arriving at Sunnybrook Hospital I guess you were assigned me as your patient. And I thank you for every moment you spent fixing me after that horrific accident. And to think I'm even transitioning into a woman. But after all that said, I hope you read an article in the Ottawa citizen newspaper back in May I think. It was about you doing a spinal cord surgery for a fellow colleage or something like that. But anyway I hope you read that article. Chow for now

What a waste of my time and the other people that had to gather all the medical information that she required to even review if she would see me or not. I currently have another doctor's opinion to operate for a shoulder issue and I wanted a second opinion prior to operating. I spent weeks following up with my three doctors to make sure she received all the paperwork. A woman that answered the phone on one of my many calls said that all the documents were received when the third doctor hadn't even sent them yet. She reviewed two of the three doctor reports and denied to see me even thought I stated every time I called that there would be three doctor's offices sending information. After receiving the third doctor's notes she still denied me because she "could not offer surgical help." When I asked if she could elaborate on this statement she couldn't since I am not a patient. Great! So I am back to where I was weeks ago and now I am wondering if she just doesn't perform the surgery… that the other doctor suggested of it she didn't even think I needed surgery.

Dr Mackinnon seemed very knowledgeable and gave us hope. She was very eccentric but we decided to proceed. Surgery went well BUT once my husband was discharged From the hospital we were treated as a burden. They were rude, accusatory and didn't want to help with Any concerns, questions or medications. We were told To go back to our primary for any medications needed. Peggy in her office was extremely rude and accusatory even though My husband followed the residents directions to a T. I do think Dr Mackinnon is an amazing surgeon however she has no bedside Manner and once the surgery is done you are absolutely On your own. They won't refill pain medications and are Very rude if asked. She had one resident who is an amazing Dr. Unfortunately we only got to speak with her once. We Really wish she was my husbands dr instead.

This doctor did not even train in the united states. She spends more time talking about herself than listening to my problem. I had a nerve injury and she used her "world expert" new technique to try to fix it and now I have more pain and less function than before surgery. I cannot work and my hand hurts more and she says my pain is beautifully under control. She can go back to Canada and practice on people there. DO not go to this doctor.
