We have been with Dr. Susan Massengill's practice for over seven years. She met with us shortly after our son was delivered with what we expected to be a terminal birth defect that affected his kidneys, among other things. Since our son's overall condition is more urological in nature, we went out-of-state for a kidney transplant, as we wanted an specialist in his condition to implant his ureter into his newly-augmented bladder. Our transplant didn't go as smoothly as planned, and Dr. Massengill was left with to deal with the aftermath. We were admitted to Levine Children's Hospital over 20 times in the year following our transplant, and she was always thoughtful, smart and contemplative. She discussed every aspect of our son's condition with us and collaborated with other specialists to seek opinions. She's intuitive, yet she treats medicine as the science it is. She never jumps to conclusions, and her approach is conservative, analytical and thorough. She doesn't claim to have… the answer until she is sure, and she partners with parents and colleagues to find answers. On top of being an expert in her field, she bonds with her patients/families and remembers details. She cares about each and every patient. She's always asking how our son is doing in school and thinks about the child, not just the condition. Her examinations are thorough, both medically and personally. Our son loves Dr. Massengill and is never fearful of his appointments. Furthermore, the nephrologists who've joined her practice recently are also impressive, kind and on-the-ball. Their backgrounds are very complementary, and I'm never disappointed when we're in the hospital and seen by someone else in the practice. The Specialty Center is an amazing practice, and I'm extremely grateful for the excellent family-centered care that we've received over the years. I'd highly recommend Dr. Massengill and staff. This year, Levines Children's Hospital was voted among the top kidney centers (#14) in the country by US News & World Report...very impressive for only being opened two years. Anyone seen in the Specialty Center will get the very best.

When my son was diagnosed with infection in his kidneys back in 2000 he had 15 doctors. They met and decided to find a pediatric specialist and transferred him to CMC handing us over into her care.The doctors had already contacted CDC offices and specialist all over the country and she came highly recommended.When they decided to transfer us Dr. Massengill was on her day off. She actually got an estimated time of arrival and met us at the hospital to get him checked him and see that all his antibiotics were administered properly. She spent quite some time with us and tried to communicate and establish a relationship with my son as well as making us feel she would do all she could. Unfortunately at that time my son was very sick and did not respond hardly at all. She definitely kept it up and he actually did recover but due to the treatment and blood pressure/kidney issues he has been following up with her every 6 months since. She always remembers things about our entire family… and makes sure she picks with him on the Duke/Carolina rivalry. She has always made sure he is aware of what is going on with his condition and he can answer any question you have about it and tell all about his medication. She has helped to educate him and he knows to be on the lookout for symptoms in others now. He encourages all his football teammates to hydrate - because she has warned what happens including the long hospital stay if you do not. She is the most positive experience anyone in our family has ever had with a doctor. That makes a lasting impression on little lives. Thanks Dr. Massengill for pulling my baby through the most tramatic event of his life. You and Jesus are our heros!!!!

We met Dr. Massengill after our son was born with a nonfunctioning Kidney. She has a way with kids and parents. I went from being a basket case to believing that I could get through this and understand what my son needs. She takes the time to talk to you and really does want to help the patient lead a normal life
