Dr. Susan Shi

Dr. Shi and Karen both work in a manner that makes you feel taken care of. There is no fluff; just pure professionalism with a familial quality, which is exactly what I want from my OBYGYN. Their standard of care removes the anxiety of going through major surgery (in my case, C-sections) and allows for complete trust in their process.

Dr. Shi is a wonderful, patient knowledgeable doctor. However, her nurses assistant Karen Davenport is AWFUL!!! She’s extremely rude and does not relay correct messages to the physician. Not only does she cut patients off when detailing information, she becomes verbally hostile as well. Other patients have agreed with this assessment as well. I have been a patient of Dr. Shi however I’m having to change doctors due to her staff (in particular her nursing assistant). This is very unfortunate because she is not reflective of her assistant. Hopefully, she addresses this issue because it is tarnishing her image in the eyes of patients.

Dr. Shi delivered my 3 boys. I started going to her from a recommendation from a friend. She has the best bedside manner and really cares. She is also very well respected in the field and has won numerous awards. Just look up her profile and bio online. I’m happy to have found a wonderful ob/gyn that I will continue to see as long as I can!

I was a patient of Dr. Shi for 10.5 years. She was always my favorite doctor, and I trusted her and her staff. I'm not sure what happened in the past few years, but the changes have not been good. First, her new staff are unhelpful, not prompt, and impersonal. They were not like that before; they used to be nice, welcoming, and would be prompt in responding to any inquiries. Second, Dr. Shi has stopped asking me how I was, if I had any questions or concerns, and no longer explains things to me. When I first started going to Dr. Shi, we always had nice conversation and she had the best bedside manner. Now appointments are super rushed and her bedside manner is nonexistent. Third, I'm no sure Dr. Shi cares about the patient as a person anymore. She's become cold and impersonal. I'm pretty sad as I'm writing this review because I used to tell people how amazing Dr. Shi is and how much I liked her and her staff. If you are the type of person who believes in a relationship with… your doctor and wants a doctor who interacts with you, then Dr. Shi is not for you. If you don't care about bedside manner or having a doctor speak to you, then you'll probably like Dr. Shi and her staff.

Disclaimer is I didn't get to see Dr. Shi in the end as the nurse was so rude we ended up cancelling the appointment and leaving the clinic. I was very much looking forward to my first prenatal appointment, and this doctor came highly recommended by friends in the field. We arrived, did the normal paper work and called in to a room by a nurse who told me if I needed the bathroom before my ultrasound. I said may I see the doctor before an ultrasound as I have concerns about having an ultrasound before 8 weeks gestation as I had read several academic research on its risks. She returned with another nurse, this nurse was likely more senior and was rather rude and immediately told us there will be no meeting if we don't do an ultrasound, my husband pressed regarding the risks of ultrasound in which she sternly replied, "there are no risks." (I have such an urge to send her all the papers and journals that I have been reading). I relented to an abdominal however she informed us that at my… stage they can only do a transvaginal and there was otherwise no other way to confirm the validity of my pregnancy. I then said, ok may I reschedule and come back at week 10 then when I am more comfortable with lower risks? She said no, we would either have to cancel and never book with Dr. Shi again, also she told us that it would be very difficult for us to book anywhere else at this point. (We were only at week 7). I have never been treated so rudely at a private medical vicinity before and to even preventing us from seeing the doctor to ask questions! If she was someone I had to face every month for my check up I was glad we have a different person now who would listen to the desires and concerns of the patient.

I totally agreed with the comments for rude assistants. They called a lot of times and told my request. No responds for two months. Terrible experiences to deal with the staffs in Dr. Shi's office.

I'd been a patient of Dr. Shi for my regular annual appointments for about 3 years & liked her. When I started trying to get pregnant everything changed. In short, she was terrible. Each times I had blood work, I would arrive to the lab and the tests were never ordered. Once I jump through hoops waiting on Dr.'s assistants to give me the paperwork to take back to the lab, the lab told me when my result would be available. No one called me with results ever, this happened at least 6x in my experience. I would continually call the Dr's assistant & be told that the results were in but the Dr. hadn't reviewed them and I would have to wait until she did- this would take days in some cases. Terrible service, especially when it comes to pregnancy. If you plan to use this Dr. expect to be calling the office ALOT, expect to feel like a number, and don't expect to ever hear from the Dr. herself, even when something comes up abnormal. They won't call.

I could not agree more with the comment below. That was exactly my experience with this doctor. I went to see her for a third opinion since I had two different diagnostics. The nurses were rude, the asked for my records before seeing Dr. Shi. She did not let me explain my situation, she refused to treat me and she made me feel horrible to the point that I wanted to cry. Her answer was I cannot treat you, go to see the last doctor, because he is your doctor.

She could be a wonderful doctor, but I never even got to meet her at my appointment. When I told her nurse that I had seen another doctor already, she made me feel horrible, telling me that it was unethical for me to see two doctors at the same time. I apologized, explaining that since this was my first pregnancy, I just wanted to make sure that I was comfortable with my doctor. She offered to answer any questions I had about Dr. Shi, so perhaps I could make a decision based on her answers without actually seeing the doctor. When I asked about Dr. Shi's bedside manner, she told me that I would not be happy with the bedside manner of anyone at the Women's Pavilion, and that I'd be happier if I just stayed with my current doctor. She added that she would never have a baby at the Women's Pavilion even though she could have free medical care there. I don't know if she was instructed to just get rid of me or if she really felt that way; either way, it felt completely inappropriate. … She said that I could still go ahead with my visit, but after all of that I decided to just leave. Again, Dr. Shi could be a lovely doctor, but unfortunately my very strange experience with her staff left much to be desired.
