Dr. Susan Elizabeth Workum, MD

I saw Dr. Workum after a loss (as I was going through a normal grieving process)and I had hoped for an empathic and active listener to help me. Dr. Workum gave me an inaccurate diagnosis of depression, even though I disagreed with that diagnosis and did not have the symptoms of depression that would warrant that diagnosis. A diagnosis of an adjustment disorder would have been far more appropriate. When I asked her what diagnosis she had documented for billing purposes, she told me that she couldn't remember. Only later when I tracked down the insurance records did I find the depression diagnosis. This was my first concern. The second was that she told me I should come in twice a week, rather than once, but no explanation was given as to why. This seemed excessive and exploitative. I found a new counselor who was a better fit for my needs and I called to politely let her know this and I asked for a receipt for the sessions I had attended so that I could submit them for reimbursement… from my FSA. She never called me back to follow up in any way and she never mailed me a receipt.
