Dr. Tess Nicole Hanner, DO

My 1 year old saw this Dr after being sent by our pediatrician to the ER for a specific concern. Her bedside manner is awful. If you raise any concerns or ask questions that go against what she thinks and recommends, she becomes very dismissive and tells you all the reasons her treatment is the only method in a very condescending manner. When I pushed further for the specific testing our pediatrician recommended she proceeded to tell us for the “third time” why that was not what she was going to do. This was an awful experience as a nervous parent. Her poor treatment and lack of concern were very disheartening as a parent.

As a pediatric emergency physician, one would expect a courteous and compassionate affect. This physician misses the mark. She takes any interjections personally, rather than as an opportunity to gain more knowledge of the situation as it pertains to symptoms or even the "norm" for each particular patient. Once you've crossed this theoretical line, she then proceeds to address you - a concerned and somewhat nervous parent (a natural part of being in the ER) - as if your thoughts and opinions are second rate and not worth her time to consider. She makes up her mind about a diagnosis and won't hear another word about additional symptoms or concerns. She attempts to placate you with an emotionless "I understand". In her insistence of her initial diagnosis, she is dismissive of other potential diagnoses and trivializes your concerns. She misdiagnosed my son as having "a sunburn" - what she meant was that she thought his condition could be a photosensitive reaction, possibly a… photoallergic reaction, but she apparently didn't believe that I could understand that terminology. When I had to return to the ER with my son 24 hours later, she then spent several minutes insisting that she had not misdiagnosed my son. Rather that she had discussed with me that it could be one of "a handful of things. Either poison ivy or a sunburn." And went on in an attempt to prove to me that I was wrong about the severity of his reaction. When I asked to see another physician, she said, "I'm the only one here." In a level one trauma center, with the only pediatric emergency department for more than 100 miles, she's the only one there. I'm not so sure that was true. But what do I know? I'm not a doctor.

Great bedside manner, really took the time to explain what was going on.
