Dr. Thomas Allen Atkins, MD

Thomas Allen Atkins, M.D., works as a contractor under Aetna Health Insurance. It’s my understanding he’s no longer a practicing physician and he should have his medical license revoked. Mr. Atkins denied my hip arthroplasty after an initial review and again after a second peer-to-peer review with my board certified orthopedic surgeon who specializes in hip replacements. Mr. Atkins is a former hand surgeon who is not educated or experienced in hip arthroplasty. I had end stage osteoarthritis, Tonnis grade 3 (bone on bone with cyst formations), and bone spurs. I was in severe chronic and acute pain. I had reached the point where I could no longer walk to the end of my street without excruciating pain. An Aetna nurse contractor, in collusion with Mr. Atkins, denied my third internal request for surgery coverage. I continued to fight the denials along with my surgeon and they were ultimately overturned in an expedited external review by a board certified orthopedic surgeon in my home… state of Colorado. How this man sleeps at night is beyond me. I’ve done my fair share of investigation, and Mr. Atkins has a track record of denying hip replacement surgery claims for Aetna. He’s either just rubber stamping while being handsomely compensated or there is something morally, ethically, or mentally wrong with this man. He admitted to my surgeon during their peer-to-peer review that I was at end stage osteoarthritis. He reviewed my x-ray with my surgeon but adamantly refused to approve surgery without just cause. I had already done extensive physical therapy to no avail and my only remaining option was surgery. This sick man was perfectly fine with prolonging my pain and suffering. Good luck to you if this perversion of a doctor denies your hip replacement. Keep fighting, don’t settle, and seek legal help if needed. And, to Mr. Atkins, perhaps one day you will experience the suffering and pain you've inflicted onto others X 100.

I had carpel tunnel surgery on both hands and had a great experience with Dr. Atkins and his staff.

Dr. Atkins takes the time to listen. He acknowledged to my teenager understanding of his process of being fearful of being re-injured. Dr. Atkins easily explains everything. I will be recommending to him to anyone who needs an Ortho for hands, wrists or elbows!
