Dr. Thomas Barton Hoag, DO

I’ve been going to Dr Hoag for years (not often as I do not need care much) When I first started going to him, he acted like he cared and was engaged in listening to the patient. For some time now, when I (or my family) has a visit with him, he is not attentive and seems aggravated he is even in the room or on a virtual visit. Very short and seems ready to just be done with the appointment. Definitely has happened to many times to keep him as our primary doctor.

Dr Hoag has been my primary now for 9 years - from Sentara to TPMG. He listens and genuinely cares- I have received outstanding care from him and his staff all of this time. He referred me to Dr Knudsen the Endocrinologist for thyroid issues and as also got superior treatment there. TPMG has the best physicians in Williamsburg.

I have been going to Dr Hoag for over 5 years. I saw his NP and received incorrect lab values. I asked about my co-pay, to pay for my bill and was given the run around. I received a certified letter from Dr. Hoag claiming, due to patient - Doctor breakdown, he will no longer be able to treat me.. RIDICULOUS

Saw him today. Needed a yearly physical and my PCP left her practice. He was arrogant, annoyed so rushed through. Everything he states he specializes in on his bio, he has no knowledge of when I saw him. He gave no patient teaching, reluctant to answer questions. Exam was a joke. His Nurse was more thorough than he when she checked me in. He knew I have Asthma, but he only auscultated my breath sounds on the front upper lobe of my left lung, for 5 seconds with his stethoscope over my wool blazer. I don't know how he could have heard anything. Should have listened to all 5 lobes of my lungs, front and back for a true assessment. Listened to my heart for 2 seconds, again over my blazer and he said, "it's ticking"...never picked up that I have a heart murmur. I have a chronic eye condition as well as a neurological disorder and he never checked my pupils for PERLA. Never asked when my last pap smear or mammogram was done. Didn't order any blood work or urinalysis which is… usually routine with a physical. I would love to know what my cholesterol is as well as my iron level due to having pernicious anemia that I informed him of. Never recommended any follow up and abruptly threw a paper to me to take to the check out. Had to ask the receptionist if he would come back to see me before I left because he didn't remember to refill my prescriptions. He was bothered by having to come back in but he did refill them. One medicine he decided that wasn't necessary for me he would not fill, not a narcotic or benzodiazepine or something outrageous like that. I was okay if he wanted to discontinue the medication but there's a warning on the bottle and on the pharmacy patient information paper that says DO NOT ABRUPTLY STOP THIS MEDICATION AS RISK OF SEIZURE TO OCCUR! I had a seizure 2 years ago that resulted in a 9 day hospital stay in a Neurologic INTENSIVE care unit at Norfolk General. I had even told him about that seizure. He's very misinformed about the practice of medicine. I will NEVER see him again nor any D.O. He gives D.O's a bad name!

Dr. Hoag is always attentive when I am in his office and with the correct diagnosis and medication, he resolved my medical issue.

Excellent Doctor. Very easy to talk to and listens well! Really cares and is respectful! Easy to get appointment and easy to speak with after hours if needed! Had him over 10 years!

This doctor cares about how he helps his patients. He is always up to date on the latest medical info. He doesn't waste your money, is medical minded/ and natural minded friendly. ive been seeing him for years and I wouldn't ever see anyone else. Super professional and trustworthy. You know he has your best interest at heart.

A doctor who listens to his patients, encourages them to research and advocate for themselves when most doctors discourage the act, and will only refer his patient to the very best of specialists only when he feels it is necessary. I've recommended him to family and friends and encourage everyone who needs a new PCP to make an appointment with him - you won't be sorry!

Dr. Hoag is an excellent Family Practitioner and has taken care of our family for the past 5 years. He is inquisitive and considers the whole person when evaluating your health. He does not order unnecessary tests or procedures, but will refer you in a minute if there is something that needs to be looked at by a specialist. We are extremely fortunate to have him as our PCM.
