He is the co-Director of the Center for Refugee and Disaster Response (CRDR) in the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, the Deputy Director of the Johns Hopkins Office of Critical Event Preparedness and Response (CEPAR) and the Director of the Hopkins School of Medicines Wilderness Medicine Course. He is a practicing emergency physician and educator with extensive disaster research and response experience, having served as the National Physician Advisor for the American Red Cross Disaster Health Services for the past 18 years. He has also consulted for the World Health Organization, Unicef, the Centers for Disease Control, the United States Agency for International Development (Office of Foreign Disaster Assistance), and the Medical Reserve Corps. He has been teaching Emergency Medicine, public health and disaster management for 20 years in the United States, as well as being an invited lecturer globally.
