Dr. Thomas A. Longo, MD

Absolutely ignorant and pathetic!!!! He has No knowledge on urology

I am a retired physician and Fellow of the American College of Physicians. I was referred to Dr. Longo for symptoms compatible with acute prostatitis and enlargement of the prostate gland. At my initial visit and after a cursory exam, Dr. Longo told me that I had three choices: a biopsy of 13 sites in the prostate; an MRI; or do nothing; I chose the MRI. I was not prescribed an antibiotic, the standard treatment for acute prostatitis. The MRI was compatible with prostate cancer with region lymph node involvement. After hearing nothing for about 10 days, I had to schedule an appointment to get the result of the MRI, The only information that I received from Dr. Longo was that my left ureter was partially obstructed and that I needed surgery. I was not informed of the full results of the MRI. I was simply handed a copy of the report. The word “cancer” was never mentioned. In attempting to schedule my surgery appointment, the fiasco continued. I was so mistrustful that I risked… losing my left kidney in order to seek the advice of another urologist.. I thought hat my “care” was so poor, that I checked the NC Medical Board website to see if Dr. Longo was actually certified to practice.

I don't know why Dr. Longo doesn't just shoot his patients. That would be kinder and less expensive. Among other things, it took 4 weeks and 4 phone calls to get biopsy results. Second biopsy was required- catheter was as left in for patient ease. But when "D" went back into the office to have catheter removed, he told Longo he had kidney pain and chills. Did the doctor consider that there might be an infection? Not uncommon after catheter use. AND my husband is highly susceptible to infection, which he had told Longo at least once. No urine taken, no test for infection- "wait and see" was the prescription. That was a Wednesday, by Friday night, hubby was feeling worse but wanted to wait until Monday to go to the doctor's office. Sunday, I called 911 and he was rushed to UNC in Clayton where they found him to be pre-septic. He was pumped with 3 different antibiotics because the doctor there felt D could not wait for them to determine the bacterial strain. To top it off, Longo never… wrote the orders for D's cancer treatment, so we went into Raleigh for our scheduled appointment-and the cancer treatment center had to track him down. So - we said goodbye to Duke. The Cancer treatment is no doubt excellent but the urology department is a horror.

Terrible experience with this doctor. He dd a prostate biopsy and promised to call within a week with the results. Never called! During an appointment 2 weeks later, he entered the exam room and said "hi, how are you, you have cancer", which seemed a bit insensitive to me. A couple of weeks later, having done a fair amount of web research to determine which of the treatment options was best for me, many of the recommendations were predicated in the 'stage' of the cancer. I used the MyChart website to ask him about the stage of the cancer. That was now about 3 months ago and he has yet to respond. Needless to say I am looking for a new doctor.

Had a biopsy done with Dr Longo. He was friendly, announced everything he did in advance, and helped me through the procedure by having a conversation.
