Dr Thomas Sampson

I was diagnosed at age 42 with both excessive femoral anteverion and FAI in both hips. I was in terrible pain and disability for 2 years before I found Dr. Sampson. While other physicians were puzzled or recommending high morbidity surgeries like femoral osteotomies, Dr. Sampson, after taking the time to comprehensively assess my case, was able to determine that repairing my torn labrums and reducing some excess bone should be sufficient. Even though I consulted with other notable specialists from HSS, Rothman, the Mayo Clinic, etc. I ended up flying across the country from the east coast for my bilateral hip operations because Dr. Sampson was the only physician who instilled confidence in me, whose other patients I spoke to were overwhelmingly content w/their results, and who seemed to have the skill and approach that promised me the best chance of success. I highly recommend the brilliant and compassionate Dr. Sampson for FAI surgery – he works with even difficult cases and older… patients that many other surgeons shy away from.

Scored high in bedside manner initially, but when he did hip surgery and within 4 months my pain returned, I saw a whole different side to him---not so friendly any longer. He's really into research, but if you read the articles he authors, he couches a "success" as a hip arthroscope working for only one year! Yikes. Seemed as if he's interested in promoting himself/his surgery more than really helping the patient, long term. My advice: get a second or third opinion---ask how long the fix is projected to last, and listen hard to his answer.

Did a great job taking away my hip pain with a hip arthroscopy. Much better than a hip replacement.
