Dr. Thomas Anthony St John, MD

Dr St John is incredibly experienced and educated. I’ve read that some people don’t like him, I’m not sure how. He doesn’t spend hours with a patient, he is quick, informative, efficient and knows his scope well. He performs everything from knee & hip replacements (mostly knee) to spinal surgeries and trauma on any other part of the body, orthopedic related. He has recently cut down on the amount of spinal surgeries, but is sure to refer to another surgeon at an outside location which shows he truly cares about the patient and not making a profit for the practice. He is conservative in treatment and will always recommend physical therapy and injections prior to opening someone up, he does not rush and likes to try all avenues. He’s very patient, mike mannered, kind and is also so funny. The practice will have a difficult time replacing him once he retires. Getting an appointment is difficult, especially for an epidural. Other staff is not the greatest, they can come off rude and… dismissive at times.

Dr St John was very helpful in educating me about my condition and what options I had. The surgery I had was a complete sucess.

If you have plenty of time in your life and don't mind waiting for nearly an hour to see the doctor, then I would recommend that you tolerate the lack of consideration and professionalism. However, you should keep in mind that you are not simply just another patient but a human being who deserves the utmost courtesy by having someone tell you that the doctor is running behind schedule. Nor should you have to wait for an unreasonable amount time for the doctor to see you. During my last visit, I left the medical center after waiting for more than an hour. Yes. I too had other things to do in my life -- like finding another doctor who is more concerned about his patients.

Spent 3 minutes with me. took a cursory glance at my xray and said there was no help for me. Didnt want to discuss anything with me. It was like he could not wait to get on to the next patient.

Walked in to the room and said you don't need spine surgery so there's nothing I can do for you. Repeated that statement several times throughout the very short appointment. Only recommendation was pain management, but I'm not having any pain. Very bad bedside manner.

Dr. St. John advised me that my disk herniation could not be reached surgically, and after 2 epidural injections dismissed me and suggested I consult my primary for pain management. Two months later I awoke with no functionality in my right leg and could not walk. A very competent Neurosurgeon, Dr. More in Bound Brook did emergency surgery successfully, and restored my ability to walk. I am still angry that Dr. St. John didn't admit it was not within HIS ability to fix my issue surgically, and refer me to a Neurosurgeon who was qualified to address my problem before I suffered the very frightening crisis that I did.
