Dr. Thomas K Stern, MD

Dr. Stern is an attentive listener and takes the time to hear your concerns. Although I was a complex case that needed a specialist and years of treatment. Unlike most GPs, Dr. Stern was never too proud to admit I needed an MD with more expertise. Over the years, he referred me to specialists in hopes they could help. He tends to ask me what he can do for me. At first, I was put off as I have no clue what needs to be done. However, after years of specialists I find myself explaining the details of their findings, medications, treatments, etc. long before sluggish medical records arrive. He's very open to trying medications I suggest while waiting for a specialist appointment and continuing with the treatment they prescribed. He's also very kind and understanding. I've been suffering from chronic pain and illness for years. After poor experiences with doctors who seemed to think I was simply being weak, lazy, or over-dramatic I became reluctant to seek medical help whatsoever despite an… increasing severity in symptoms. Dr. Stern both empathized and encouraged me. Even when the first specialist didn't work out and ultimately wrote me off within 10 minutes after an appointment I waited months for with great hopes, Dr. Stern referred me to another specialist without judgement. In fact, he still believed in me even when I began doubting a proper diagnosis was even possible. Another important yet rare quality in a physician is admitting when one has no idea what the diagnosis might be. Dr. Stern was never too proud to say he was stumped. I've had Dr's do far more damage than good believing they had a handle on things when they were in over their head. Dr. Stern would treat my symptoms hoping to keep me as comfortable as possible while we played the waiting game with specialists, numerous tests, and long wait-lists.Another great thing about him is that I felt as though he listened to my opinion. For instance, when I suggested a medication, he took the time to go over the available dosages and informed me of what he thought would be an appropriate dosing range given my body size. Then, he'd ask which option I'd like to try.I'd definitely recommend him to my friends, especially those suffering from chronic illness.
